Abstract

Disclosed is an apparatus that provides refrigerant based energy storage and cooling. When connected to a condensing unit, the system has the ability to store energy capacity during one time period and provide cooling from the stored energy during a second time period. The system requires minimal energy to operate during either time period, and only a fraction of the energy required to operate the system during the first time period is required to operate the system during the second time period using an optional refrigerant pump.

Claims (33)

1. A refrigeration apparatus comprising:

a condensing unit comprising a compressor and a condenser;

a thermal energy storage unit comprising a tank that contains a storage heat exchanger and at least partially filled with a phase change liquid;

a load heat exchanger;

a refrigeration management unit connected to said condensing unit, said thermal energy storage unit and said load heat exchanger; and,

a refrigerant management controller in communication with said refrigeration management unit and comprised of operational controllers using environmental data to regulate and control operation of said refrigeration apparatus, wherein said environmental data is a condition variable, consumption variable or cost variable that is derived at a location remote from said thermal energy storage unit and transmitted to said refrigerant management controller of said thermal energy storage unit.

2. A refrigeration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said refrigerant management controller is located in proximity to said thermal energy storage unit.

3. A refrigeration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said refrigerant management controller is located remotely from said thermal energy storage unit.

4. A refrigeration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said refrigerant management controller controls a plurality of said refrigerant management units of a plurality of said thermal energy storage units.

5. A refrigeration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said refrigerant management controller is controlled by a utility company.

6. A refrigeration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said refrigerant management controller is controlled by an energy service company.

7. A refrigeration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said refrigerant management controller is controlled by a demand response aggregator.

8. A refrigeration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said consumption variable consists of at least one of the following real-time environmental variables:

power consumption and energy consumption.

9. A refrigeration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said condition variable consists of at least one of the following real-time environmental variables:

energy demand, cooling degree days, utility load profiles, and energy grid status.

10. A refrigeration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said cost variable consists of at least one of the following real-time environmental variables:

current electric power price, current oil price, current propane price, current natural gas price, day-ahead price, day-of price, electric utility revenue, current electricity generation price, current electricity transmission price, current electricity distribution price or energy service company revenue.

11. A refrigeration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said consumption variable consists of at least one of the following projected environmental variables:

power consumption and energy consumption.

12. A refrigeration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said condition variable consists of at least one of the following projected environmental variables:

projected energy demand, projected cooling degree days, projected utility load profiles, and projected energy grid status.

13. A refrigeration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said cost variable consists of at least one of the following projected environmental variables:

projected electric power price, projected oil price, projected propane price, projected natural gas price, projected day-ahead price, projected day-of price electric rate forecast, projected electricity generation price, projected electricity transmission price, projected electricity distribution price and projected electric utility revenue.

14. A refrigeration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said environmental data is derived from a plurality of thermal energy storage units.

15. A refrigeration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of said regulation and control operation of said refrigeration apparatus is based upon a time dependent value of energy.

16. A refrigeration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of said regulation and control operation of said refrigeration apparatus is based upon at least one of the following: electricity generation price, electricity transmission price or electricity distribution price.

17. A refrigeration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of said regulation and control operation of said refrigeration apparatus is in response to a price event, a reliability event, or a load balancing event.

18. A refrigeration apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said transmission of said environmental data is performed with a wide area communications interface.

19. A refrigeration apparatus of claim 18 , wherein said wide area communications interface is a radio broadcast data system.

20. A refrigeration apparatus of claim 18 , wherein said wide area communications interface is a paging system.

21. A refrigeration apparatus of claim 18 , wherein said wide area communications interface is an external physical network interface.

22. A refrigeration apparatus of claim 18 , wherein said wide area communications interface further comprises an expansion interface, said expansion interface that is used to extend the communication capabilities of said refrigerant management controller and provide means for memory storage and logging.
