MULTI-LAYER GASKET
The invention provides a multi-layer gasket seal. The gasket seal includes a sheet having a first sheet surface. An aperture pierces the first sheet surface. A first channel is defined in the first sheet surface and extends along a first path around the aperture. The first channel has a depth and a width. The gasket seal also includes a ring seal disposed in the first channel. The ring seal has a thickness defined between a sealing surface facing away from the channel and an opposing surface facing the channel. One of the thickness and the depth varies about the aperture such that a distance between the sealing surface and the first sheet surface varies about the aperture.
1 . A multi-layer gasket seal comprising:
a sheet having a first sheet surface and an aperture piercing said first sheet surface and a first channel defined in said first sheet surface extending along a first path around said aperture and having a depth and a width; and
a ring seal disposed in said first channel and having a thickness defined between a sealing surface facing away from said channel and an opposing surface facing said channel, wherein one of said thickness and said depth varies about said aperture such that a distance between said sealing surface and said first sheet surface varies about said aperture.
2 . The multi-layer gasket seal of claim 1 wherein said width varies along said path.
3 . The multi-layer gasket seal of claim 1 wherein said depth varies along said path.
4 . The multi-layer gasket seal of claim 3 wherein said thickness is constant along said path.
5 . The multi-layer gasket seal of claim 1 wherein said thickness varies along said path.
6 . The multi-layer gasket seal of claim 5 wherein said depth is constant along said path.
7 . The multi-layer gasket seal of claim 1 wherein said sheet is metal.
8 . The multi-layer gasket seal of claim 7 wherein said sheet is steel.
9 . The multi-layer gasket seal of claim 8 wherein said ring seal is metal.
10 . The multi-layer gasket seal of claim 1 wherein said sheet further comprises:
a second sheet surface opposite said first sheet surface;
a second channel defined in said second sheet surface extending along a second path parallel to said first path around said aperture and having a depth and a width wherein said first channel is disposed between said second channel and said aperture;
a first support member received in said second channel and having a first thickness;
a third channel extending along a third path parallel to said first path around said aperture and having a depth and a width wherein said third channel is disposed between said first channel and said aperture; and
a second support member received in said third channel and having a second thickness.
11 . The multi-layer gasket seal of claim 10 wherein said depths of said second and third channels vary along said respective second and third paths.
12 . The multi-layer gasket seal of claim 10 wherein said thicknesses of said first and second support members vary along said respective second and third paths.
13 . The multi-layer gasket seal of claim 10 wherein said widths of said second and third channels vary along said respective second and third paths.
14 . A method for forming multi-layer gasket seal comprising the steps of:
piercing a first sheet with an aperture;
defining a channel having a depth and a width in a first sheet surface of the first sheet extending along a first path around the aperture;
disposing a ring seal in the channel having a thickness defined between a sealing surface facing away from said channel and an opposing surface facing said channel; and
varying one of the thickness of the ring seal and the depth about the aperture such that a distance between the sealing surface and the first sheet surface varies about the aperture.
15 . A multi-layer gasket seal comprising:
a sheet having a first sheet surface and an aperture piercing said first sheet surface and a first channel defined in said first sheet surface extending along a first path around said aperture and having a depth and a width; and
a ring seal disposed in said first channel and having a thickness defined between a sealing surface facing away from said channel and an opposing surface facing said channel, wherein said depth varies about said aperture such that a distance between said sealing surface and said first sheet surface varies about said aperture.
