Abstract

Techniques and devices for depolarizing light and producing a variable differential group delays in optical signals. In one implementation, an input optical beam is split into first and second beams with orthogonal polarizations. One or two optical reflectors are then used to cause the first and second optical beams to undergo different optical path lengths before they are recombined into a single output beam. An adjustment mechanism may used implemented to adjust the difference in the optical path lengths of the first and second beams to produce a variable DGD. When the depolarization of light is desired, the difference in the optical path lengths of the first and second beams is set to be greater than the coherence length of the input optical beam.

Claims (15)

1. A device, comprising:

a first polarization beam splitter (PBS), a second PBS, and a reflector arranged to form an optical system,

said first PBS positioned to receive an input optical beam with a coherent length and to split the input optical beam into a first beam and a second beam polarized orthogonal to said first beam,

said reflector positioned to reflect said first beam to said second PBS to cause an optical path difference between said first and said second beams at said second PBS to be greater than said coherent length, and

said second PBS positioned to receive and combine said first and said second beams to produce an output beam;

a first polarization beam displacer in an optical path of the input optical beam to separate the input beam into two orthogonally polarized input beams to be received by said first PBS; and

a second polarization beam displacer in an optical path of the output beam to combine two orthogonally polarized beams from said PBS into said output beam.

2. The device as in claim 1 , wherein the reflector is a prism reflector.

3. The device as in claim 1 ,

wherein said first polarization beam displacer is oriented to allow one of the two orthogonally polarized input beams to transmit through said first PBS and the other to be reflected by said first PBS.

4. The device as in claim 1 , further comprising:

a first polarization element located in one beam of the two orthogonally polarized beams between said first PBS and said reflector to rotate a polarization of the one beam by 90 degrees to be parallel to another beam; and

a second polarization element located between said reflector and said second PBS in a path of the one beam after being reflected by said reflector to rotate a polarization of the reflected one beam by 90 degrees to be parallel to another beam reflected from said reflector.

5. The device as in claim 1 , further comprising a mechanism to change a distance between said reflector and said first and said second PBSs to produce a variable differential group delay in said output beam.

6. The device as in claim 1 , further comprising a fiber to deliver the input optical beam to said first PBS.
