Abstract

A vehicle mirror assembly having a housing or base member, a mirror lens and a bezel member. The mirror lens is provided in the shape of a portion of an end of an ellipsoid and has a varying radius of curvature. The center portion of the lens has a smaller radius of curvature than the outer portions along the major axis of the lens creating an improved field of view of the reflected image. The bezel is positioned over the intersection of the housing and mirror lens.

Claims (53)

1. A vehicle mirror assembly comprising:

a housing member;

a mirror lens member; and

a bezel member;

said mirror lens having a curvature substantially conforming to the configuration of an end of an ellipsoid;

wherein said mirror lens member has a major axis and a minor axis perpendicular to said major axis, said major axis having a first radius of curvature along a portion including the midpoint of the axis, and a second radius of curvature along portions adjacent the ends of the major axis, said first radius of curvature being smaller than said second radius of curvature.

2. A vehicle mirror assembly comprising:

a housing member;

a mirror lens member; and

a bezel member;

said mirror lens having a curvature substantially conforming to the configuration of an end of an ellipsoid;

wherein said mirror lens member has a varying radius of curvature along its major axis, the radius of curvature increasing adjacent the outer edges of said mirror lens.

3. A vehicle mirror assembly comprising:

a housing member;

a mirror lens member; and

a bezel member;

said mirror lens having a curvature substantially conforming to the configuration of an end of an ellipsoid;

wherein said mirror lens member has a curvature substantially conforming to the configuration of a major axis end of an ellipsoid and said mirror lens member has a major axis and a minor axis perpendicular to said major axis, said major axis having a first radius of curvature along a portion including the midpoint of the axis, and a second radius of curvature along portions adjacent the ends of the major axis, said first radius of curvature being smaller than said second radius of curvature.

4. A vehicle mirror assembly comprising:

a housing member;

a mirror lens member; and

a bezel member;

said mirror lens having a curvature substantially conforming to the configuration of an end of an ellipsoid;

wherein said mirror lens member has a curvature substantially conforming to the configuration of a major axis end of an ellipsoid and said mirror lens member has a varying radius of curvature along its major axis, the radius of curvature increasing adjacent the outer edges of said mirror lens.

5. The method of making a mirror assembly, said method comprises the steps of:

providing a housing member;

forming a mirror lens member with a curvature substantially conforming to the configuration of an end of an ellipsoid;

connecting said mirror lens member to said housing member; and

positioning a bezel member at least partially covering the joint between said housing member and said mirror lens member;

wherein said mirror lens member has a major axis and a minor axis perpendicular to said major axis, said major axis having a first radius of curvature along a portion including the midpoint of the axis, and a second radius of curvature along portions adjacent the ends of the major axis, said first radius of curvature being smaller than said second radius of curvature.

6. The method of making a mirror assembly, said method comprises the steps of:

providing a housing member;

forming a mirror lens member with a curvature substantially conforming to the configuration of an end of an ellipsoid;

connecting said mirror lens member to said housing member; and

positioning a bezel member at least partially covering the joint between said housing member and said mirror lens member;

wherein said mirror lens member has a varying radius of curvature along its major axis, the radius of curvature increasing adjacent the outer edges of said mirror lens.

7. A mirror assembly comprising:

a housing member,

a mirror lens member, and

a rigid connecting member, securing said housing and mirror lens members together;

said mirror lens member having a continuously varying radius of curvature increasing from a center surface portion having a first radius of curvature towards a peripheral surface portion having a second radius of curvature, said second radius of curvature being greater than said first radius of curvature,

wherein said center surface portion forms a first proportion image view and said peripheral surface portion forms a second proportion image view, said first proportion image view generating smaller image proportions than said second proportion image view.

8. The mirror assembly as described in claim 7 , wherein said mirror lens member comprises a major axis tip portion of an ellipsoid.

9. The mirror assembly as described in claim 7 wherein said connecting member is a bezel member.

10. A multi-piece mirror assembly comprising:

a housing member; and

a mirror lens member connected to said housing member;

said mirror lens member comprising a major axis tip portion of an ellipsoid, said major tip portion formed by dividing said ellipsoid across a major axis, said mirror lens member generating a first proportion image view and a second proportion image view, said first proportion image view generating smaller image proportions from said second proportion image view, said first proportion image view positioned at an ellipsoid tip point.

11. The multi-piece mirror assembly as described in claim 10 further comprising a rigid connecting member positioned over the interface between said housing member and mirror lens member after they are positioned together.

12. The multi-piece mirror assembly as described in claim 10 wherein said ellipsoid is divided perpendicular to said major axis and then further divided parallel to said major axis to form said major axis tip portion.

13. A mirror assembly comprising:

a mirror lens member having a varying radius of curvature with a center surface portion having a first radius of curvature and a peripheral surface portion having at least one second radius of curvature, said varying radius of curvature constantly increasing from said first radius of curvature towards sat at least one second radius of curvature,

wherein said center surface portion forms a first proportion image view and said peripheral surface portion forms a second proportion image view, said first proportion image view generating smaller image proportions than said second proportion image view.
