Abstract

An In The Ear (ITE) microphone improves the acoustic response of a Behind The Ear (BTE) Implantable Cochlear Stimulation (ICS) system during telephone use. An acoustic seal provided by holding a telephone earpiece against the ear provides improved coupling of low frequency (up to about 1 KHz) sound waves, sufficient to overcome losses due to the near field acoustic characteristics common to telephones. In an exemplary embodiment, the ITE microphone is connected to a removable ear hook of the BTE ICS system by a short bendable stalk.

Claims (17)

1. A Behind The Ear (BTE) Implantable Cochlear Stimulation (ICS) system comprising:

a BTE device including a BTE speech processor;

an earhook removably attachable to the BTE speech processor;

a microphone, wherein the microphone converts audio sounds into electrical signals which are processed by the speech processor to generate signals provided to an implantable circuit adapted to generate electrical pulses to stimulate nerves in the cochlea, wherein the microphone includes a soundport on one end and multiple terminals on the other;

a bendable, formable stalk connected between the microphone and the earhook for positioning the soundport to receive sound from an earpiece of a communications handset held to the ear, wherein the soundport is open to the volume between the earpiece and the ear; and

means for electrically connecting the terminal end of the microphone to the BTE speech processor.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the communications handset is a telephone handset.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the microphone further comprises a filter at a distal end of the microphone, wherein the filter seals the microphone from the environment.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the stalk is adapted to retain a bend once bent, whereby a user may adjust the position of the soundport by bending the stalk.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein the stalk is formed of shrink tubing.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the earhook is removably attachable to a the BTE speech processor using a coaxial connector.

7. The system of claim 6 wherein means for electrically connecting the terminal end of the microphone to the speech processor of the BTE device comprises using a first conductor, a second conductor, and a third conductor, wherein the first conductor is connected to the coaxial connector and wherein the second and third conductors are connected to a bias setting resistor.

8. The System of claim 6 wherein the microphone further includes a sleeve wherein the microphone resides.

9. The system of claim 8 , further comprising:

at least one stiffening wire member having a first wire end and a second wire end, wherein the first wire end terminates proximate the coaxial connector and the second wire end is attached to the sleeve; and

a cable, wherein the conductors reside within the cable; and

wherein the at least one stiffening wire member and the cable are wound to form the bendable, formable stalk.
