Abstract

A universal securing device for holding catheters of various shapes and sizes and the like in place includes a base and cover. The cover may be connected to the base by a hinge which allows the cover to be lifted open or pushed down into a closed position, over a catheter fitting. The base may have locating elements configured and arranged to fit around catheter fittings of various sizes, and the locating elements prevent substantial movement of a catheter fitting and catheter in various dimensions. The cover may include capture elements which act to grip and compress the catheter fitting when the securing device is in a closed position, thus preventing substantial movement of a catheter fitting and catheter in various dimensions. The base may be attached to a patient with an adhesive pad attached to the bottom surface of the base.

Claims (36)

1. An anchoring system for securing a catheter to the body of a patient, comprising:

a fitting on a medical line, the fitting having a body and a pair of outwardly extending wings;

a base member having two pairs of wall segments, the wall segments being disposed relative to the base member so as to generally define a land area therebetween for receiving the body of the fitting, the wall segments from each pair of wall segments being spaced apart to receive at least a portion of a wing of the catheter therebetween and to inhibit at least longitudinal movement of the secured wing relative to the base member;

a trough extending up from the base member and positioned forward of the two pairs of wall segments, the trough receiving at least a portion of the body of the catheter;

a cover being attachable to the base member, the cover being movable to an engaged position in which at least a portion of each wall segment is disposed between the cover and the base member; and

interengaging structure which releasably secures together the base member and the cover in the engaged position.

2. An anchoring system as in claim 1 , wherein each pair of wall segments is disposed relative to the base member so as to contact the pair of outwardly extending wings.

3. An anchoring system as in claim 1 , wherein each pair of wall segments is disposed relative to the base member so as to contact the cover when the cover is in the engaged position.

4. An anchoring system as in claim 1 , wherein each pair of wall segments is arranged relative to the other pair of wall segments so as to define a non-uniform distance across said land area as measured in a longitudinal direction.

5. An anchoring system as in claim 1 , wherein an upper surface of each pair of wall segments is spaced above the base member so that at least a portion of the body of the fitting lies between the base member and the upper surface at least when the catheter is secured in the retainer.

6. An anchoring system as in claim 1 , wherein at least a portion each wall segment has a rectangular shape.

7. An anchoring system as in claim 1 , wherein the interengaging structure comprises at least two securement members configured to interact with the cover when the cover is in the engaged position.

8. An anchoring system as in claim 7 , wherein the cover includes at least two receptacles configured to interact with the at least two securement members when the cover is in the engaged position.

9. An anchoring system as in claim 8 , wherein each receptacle receives a corresponding portion of the at least two securement members at least when the cover is in the engaged position.

10. An anchoring system as in claim 7 , wherein each of the at least two securement members has an angled surface which locks to the cover when the cover is in the engaged position.

11. An anchoring system as in claim 8 , wherein each of the at least two securement members has an enlarged head at an end distal of the base member.

12. An anchoring system as in claim 11 , wherein each receptacle receives a corresponding one of the enlarged heads when the cover is in the engaged position.

13. An anchoring system as in claim 7 , wherein the cover and each of the at least two securement members are configured to flex slightly when the cover is moved to the engaged position.

14. An anchoring system as in claim 7 , wherein the front and back pairs of wall segments are disposed on the base member so as to be spaced from the at least two securement members.

15. An anchoring system as in claim 1 comprising a plurality of contact surfaces disposed so as to face the base member when the cover is in the engaged position.

16. An anchoring system as in claim 15 , wherein the plurality of contact surfaces inhibits the catheter from being crushed between the base member and the cover.

17. An anchoring system as in claim 15 , wherein the plurality of contact surfaces is disposed above the base member.

18. An anchoring system as in claim 1 , wherein the cover is flexible.

19. An anchoring system as in claim 1 , wherein each wall segment is disposed between the cover and the base member when the cover is in the engaged position.

20. An anchoring system as in claim 1 , wherein the cover contacts at least the body of the fitting when the cover is in the engaged position.

21. An anchoring system as in claim 1 , wherein the wall segments of each pair of wall segments inhibit lateral movement of the secured wing relative to the base member.

22. An anchoring system as in claim 7 , wherein the at least two securement members are separate from the two pairs of wall segments.

23. An anchoring system as in claim 7 , wherein each of the at least two securement members is configured as a latching arm.

24. A securement system for a catheter, the securement system comprising:

a fitting on a medical line, the fitting having a rigid body and a pair of outwardly extending wings;

a retainer having at least two upstanding members that are spaced apart to receive the rigid component therebetween and that cooperate so as to inhibit longitudinal movement of the medical article relative to the retainer;

a trough separate from the at least two upstanding members, the trough extending up from the retainer and positioned forward of the at least two upstanding members, the trough receiving at least a portion of the rigid body of the fitting;

a cover being movable between a first position and a second position, the cover being engaged with the retainer and covering at least part of the rigid body when in the second position; and

interengaging structure which releasably secures together the retainer and the cover in the second position.

25. A securement system as in claim 24 wherein the at least two upstanding members are disposed between the interengaging structure.

26. A securement system as in claim 25 , wherein the interengaging structure is separate from the at least two upstanding members.
