Abstract

An obturator in which a filling material includes a biodegradable thermoplastic polymer. A bioactive substance may also be included in the filling material. The thermoplastic polymer acts as a matrix for the bioactive substance. The composition may include other polymeric resins, fillers, plasticizers and other additives typically used in dental materials.

Claims (20)

1. An obturator for filling a root canal comprising:

a handle; and

a shaft;

wherein the shaft is fabricated of a filling core in the form of the shaft, which filling core is designed to, by itself, fit and fill the root canal; and

wherein the filling core consists of a filling material comprising a biodegradable thermoplastic polymer selected from the group consisting of polylactides, polyglycolides, polycaprolactones, polyanhydrides, polyorthoesters, polydioxanones, polyketals, polyphosphazenes, polyhydroxybutyrates, polyhydroxyvalerates, polyalkylene oxalates, polyethylene oxides, polyalkylene succinates, poly(malic acid) polymers, polymaleic anhydrides, poly(methylvinyl) ethers, poly(amino acids), chitin, chitosan, or copolymers thereof, terpolymers thereof, combinations thereof, and mixtures thereof, and wherein the filling material further comprises a bioactive filler.

2. The obturator of claim 1 wherein the bioactive filler comprises bioglass, calcium phosphate, Portland cement, hydroxyapatite, tricalcium phosphate, a di- or polyphosphonic acid, an anti-estrogen, a sodium fluoride preparation, a substance having a phosphate to calcium ratio similar to natural bone, or mixtures thereof.

3. The obturator of claim 1 wherein the obturator further comprises a sliding support positioned between the shaft and handle capable of indicating the depth of a root canal and for maintaining the obturator in place in the root canal, wherein the sliding support is capable of slidably moving along the shaft to the point at the top of the root canal after the obturator is inserted in the root canal.

4. The obturator of claim 1 wherein the obturator is capable of being inserted in a root canal to fill the root canal, and a means for indicating the depth of the root canal, after the obturator is inserted in the root canal, is capable of being slidably moved to the point at the top of the root canal and, the obturator is designed to be capable of thereafter being cut off at a point desired to fit the canal.

5. An obturator for filling a root canal comprising:

a handle; and

a shaft;

wherein the shaft consists of a filling core that is designed to, by itself, fit and fill a root canal wherein the filling core consists of a filling material comprising a biodegradable thermoplastic polymer selected from the group consisting of a polylactide, polyglycolide, polycaprolactone, copolymer thereof, and combination thereof; and

wherein the filling material further comprises a bioactive filler selected from the group consisting of bioglass, calcium phosphate, Portland cement, hydroxyapatite, tricalcium phosphate, a di- or polyphosphonic acid, an anti-estrogen, a sodium fluoride preparation, a substance having a phosphate to calcium ratio similar to natural bone, and mixtures thereof.

6. The obturator of claim 5 wherein the obturator further comprises a sliding support positioned between the shaft and handle capable of indicating the depth of a root canal and for maintaining the obturator in place in the root canal; and wherein the obturator is capable of being inserted in the root canal to fill the root canal and the sliding support, after the obturator is inserted in the root canal, is capable of being slidably moved along the shaft to the point at the top of the root canal, and wherein the obturator is thereafter capable of being cut off at a point desired to fit the root canal.

7. An obturator for filling a root canal comprising:

a handle; and

a shaft consisting of a filling core;

wherein the filling core is designed to, by itself, fit and fill a root canal wherein the filling core consists of a filling material comprising a biodegradable thermoplastic polymer, and wherein the biodegradable thermoplastic polymer is selected from the group consisting of polylactides, polyglycolides, polycaprolactones, polyanhydrides, polyorthoesters, polydioxanones, polyketals, polyphosphazenes, polyhydroxybutyrates, polyhydroxyvalerates, polyalkylene oxalates, polyethylene oxides, polyalkylene succinates, poly(malic acid) polymers, polymaleic anhydrides, poly(methylvinyl) ethers, poly(amino acids), chitin, chitosan, or copolymers thereof, terpolymers thereof, combinations thereof, and mixtures thereof;

wherein the obturator further comprises a sliding support positioned between the shaft and handle capable of indicating the depth of a root canal and for maintaining the obturator in place in the root canal; and

wherein the obturator is capable of being inserted in the root canal to fill the root canal and the sliding support is capable of being slidably moved along the shaft to the point at the top of the root canal after the appliance is inserted in the root canal, and wherein the obturator is thereafter capable of being cut off at a point desired to fit the root canal.
