Abstract

A method for use in medical imaging of a patient including, with the patient immobilized with respect to an imaging reference frame, acquiring first digital imaging information including a first region of interest using a first imaging modality; processing the first digital imaging information to identify a feature for analysis; and using a second imaging modality to acquire targeted second imaging information for a second region of interest, the second region of interest corresponding to a subset of the first region of interest, wherein the second region of interest includes the feature for analysis. An apparatus for use in medical imaging comprising structure for immobilizing a patient with respect to an imaging reference frame; a first imaging system for acquiring first digital imaging information including a first region of interest using a first imaging modality; a processor processing the first digital imaging information using a diagnostic tool to identify a feature of interest; and a second imaging system for acquiring second imaging information using a second imaging modality, the second imaging information corresponding to a second region of interest including the feature for analysis.

Claims (32)

1. A method for use in medical imaging, comprising the steps of:

1) immobilizing a patient with respect to an imaging reference frame; and

2) with said patient immobilized;

a) acquiring first digital imaging information using a first imaging device having a first imaging modality;

b) processing said first digital imaging information using a computer-based diagnostic tool to identify a feature for analysis, said step of processing comprises operating a trained system to identify the feature for analysis, wherein the trained system is trained to recognize suspicious features based on off-line training involving reference features having a known diagnosis; and

c) based on said step of processing, acquiring targeted second imaging information associated with the feature for analysis using a second imaging device having a second imaging modality different from the first imaging modality, wherein the second imaging device is steered towards the feature for analysis using information provided by the step of processing.

2. A method as set forth in claim 1 , wherein said off-line training involves identification of a first set of potential parameters for use in classification of a feature under consideration.

3. A method as set forth in claim 2 , wherein said step of processing involves using a second set of parameters, comprising a subset less than the whole of said first set, to identify said feature for analysis.

4. A method for use in medical imaging, comprising the steps of:

1) immobilizing a patient with respect to an imaging reference frame; and

2) with said patient immobilized;

a) acquiring first digital imaging information using a first imaging device having a first imaging modality;

b) processing said first digital imaging information using a computer-based diagnostic tool to identify a feature for analysis, said step of processing comprises segmenting said first region of interest into a number of segments so as to provide segmented imaging data; and

c) based on said step of processing, acquiring targeted second imaging information associated with the feature for analysis using a second imaging device having a second imaging modality different from the first imaging modality, wherein the second imaging device is steered towards the feature for analysis using information provided by the step of processing.

5. A method as set forth in claim 4 , wherein said step of segmenting comprises performing a multi-resolution analysis in conjunction with said segmenting so as to preserve certain characteristics of said feature at a high resolution quality and reduce an overall quantity of data used to represent said first area of interest.

6. A method as set forth in claim 4 , wherein said step of processing comprises identifying candidate features based on said segmented imaging data.

7. A method as set forth in claim 6 , wherein said processing further comprises distinguishing a subset of features of interest from said candidate features based on a supervised training process.

8. A method as set forth in claim 4 , wherein said step of segmenting comprises defining a boundary of said first region of interest.

9. A method as set forth in claim 8 , wherein said defining comprises measuring an imaging parameter value at a first location inside said first region of interest, measuring a second imaging parameter value at a second location outside said first region of interest, establishing a threshold value between said first value and said second value, and using said threshold value to define a mask region.

10. A method as set forth in claim 9 , wherein said step of defining further comprises establishing a number of linear projections that intersect with an edge of said mask region at a number of points.

11. A method as set forth in claim 10 , wherein said step of defining comprises fitting a curve to said number of points.

12. A method as set forth in claim 11 , wherein said step of segmenting further comprises defining a rectangle that corresponds to a region defined by said curve as said first region of interest.

13. A method as set forth in claim 4 , further comprising the step of establishing imaging parameters for processing said first imaging information on a segment-by-segment basis.

14. A method as set forth in claim 4 , further comprising conducting morphological processing to process features extending over more than one segment.

15. A method for use in medical imaging, comprising the steps of:

1) immobilizing a patient with respect to an imaging reference frame; and

2) with said patient immobilized;

a) acquiring first digital imaging information using a first imaging device having a first imaging modality;

b) processing said first digital imaging information using a computer-based diagnostic tool to identify a feature for analysis, wherein said feature for analysis is a texture based analysis or a shape based analysis; and

c) based on said step of processing, acquiring targeted second imaging information associated with the feature for analysis using a second imaging device having a second imaging modality different from the first imaging modality, wherein the second imaging device is steered towards the feature for analysis using information provided by the step of processing.

16. A method as set forth in claim 15 , wherein said step of processing comprises operating a trained system to identify the feature for analysis, wherein the trained system is trained to recognize suspicious features based on off-line training involving reference features having a known diagnosis.

17. A method as set forth in claim 15 , wherein said step of processing comprises segmenting said first region of interest into a number of segments so as to provide segmented imaging data.
