Abstract

A system for manufacturing an optical lens that is configured to correct optical aberrations, including, e.g., high order aberrations such as described by Zemike polynomials. The system can include a measurement system configured to measure optical aberrations in a patient's eye and to create measured optical aberration data. A calculation system is configured to receive the measured optical aberration data and to determine a lens definition based on the measured optical aberration data. A fabrication system is configured to produce a correcting lens based on the lens definition.

Claims (16)

1. A method of customizing vision correction, comprising:

measuring optical aberration data of a patient's eye;

calculating a lens definition based on the optical aberration data, wherein calculating the lens definition comprises calculating a correction of at least one low order aberration and at least one high order aberration and is based at least partly on the patient's pupil size; and

fabricating a correcting lens based on the lens definition wherein said correcting lens comprises a photosensitive gel layer between a first and a second optical element and said photosensitive gel layer is a matrix polymer having a monomer mixture dispersed therein and is cured.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein fabricating the correcting lens comprises adjusting only low order aberrations.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein fabricating the correcting lens comprises applying a low order correction to a framed lens.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein fabricating the correcting lens comprises exposing the first and second optical element to curing radiation.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein fabricating the correcting lens comprises depositing one or more monomer layers having a pattern of thickness to achieve the low order lens definition.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein calculating the low order lens definition comprises calculating at least one low order aberration and at least one high order aberration.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein calculating the lens definition is further based on at least one of a patient's vertex distance, pupil distance, gaze, x-y tilt, color preference, spectral tint preference, photochromic preference, ultra-violet coating preference, anti-reflective coating preference, or patient wear preference.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein fabricating the correcting lens comprises curing a photosensitive component within the correcting lens.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

(a) the matrix polymer comprises one or more polymer selected from the group consisting of a polyester, a polystyrene, a polyacrylate, a thiol-cured epoxy and a thiol-cured isocyanate and

(b) the monomer mixture comprises a thiol monomer and at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of an ene monomer and an yne monomer.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the matrix polymer is a thiol-cured epoxy and the monomer mixture is a thiol monomer and an ene monomer.

11. The method of claim 9 wherein the matrix polymer is a thiol-cured epoxy and the monomer mixture is a thiol monomer and an yne monomer.
