Abstract

A nozzle arrangement for an inkjet printhead includes a substrate that defines an ink supply channel. Drive circuitry is arranged on the substrate. A nozzle chamber structure is mounted on the substrate and defines a nozzle chamber in fluid communication with the ink supply channel and a nozzle rim defining an ink ejection port in fluid communication with the nozzle chamber. A post extends from the substrate. A thermal actuator mechanism having an actuator arm extends from the post and into the nozzle chamber. The actuator mechanism includes a pair of spaced conductive layers mounted on opposite sides of the actuator arm with an active one of the layers being connected to the drive circuitry. The drive circuitry for supplying an electrical current to the active layer is interposed between the substrate and the actuator arm.

Claims (13)

1. A nozzle arrangement for an inkjet printhead, the nozzle arrangement comprising:

a substrate that defines an ink supply channel;

drive circuitry arranged on the substrate;

a nozzle chamber structure mounted on the substrate and defining a nozzle chamber in fluid communication with the ink supply channel and a nozzle rim defining an ink ejection port in fluid communication with the nozzle chamber;

a post, provided outside of the nozzle chamber, extending from the substrate; and

a thermal actuator mechanism comprising an actuator arm extending from the post and terminating freely in the nozzle chamber, the actuator mechanism comprising a pair of spaced conductive layers mounted on opposite sides of the actuator arm with an active one of the layers being connected to the drive circuitry,

wherein the drive circuitry for supplying an electrical current to the active layer is interposed between the substrate and the actuator arm.

2. A nozzle arrangement as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the active layer comprises a thinned portion proximal to the post.

3. A nozzle arrangement as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the layers are configured so that, when the current supply is inactive, the layers are in thermal balance with one another.

4. A nozzle arrangement as claimed in claim 1 , wherein each layer is formed from titanium nitride.

5. A nozzle arrangement as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the actuator mechanism is a paddle that terminates the actuator arm within the nozzle chamber.

6. A nozzle arrangement as claimed in claim 5 , wherein the end paddle is circular in plan.

7. A nozzle arrangement as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the active layer defines a corrugated portion with transverse corrugations corresponding to lines of a drive transistor of the drive circuitry.
