Abstract

An automated banking machine ( 10 ) is operative to carry out financial transactions and includes a user interface ( 15 ). The user interface includes a card reader ( 16 ) which is operative to read data on user cards which identify user's financial accounts. A fascia of the machine includes a keypad ( 404, 438, 458 ) through which users input confidential data. Covers ( 400, 422, 430 ) prevent unauthorized persons from viewing confidential inputs to the keypad. Alternatively, movable panels ( 462, 464 ) are movable to prevent unauthorized viewing of confidential inputs. Alternatively a keypad cover is selectively collapsible to prevent digit access. A visual indicator is operative to indicate to a user that keypad inputs are being encrypted. Disinfecting techniques may be used to disinfect manual contact surfaces of the machine.

a display,

a keypad cover overlying at least a portion of some of the keys of the keypad,

wherein the cover bounds a first opening transversely disposed of at least some of the keys of the keypad,

wherein the first opening is configured to enable insertion of manual digits therethrough in a first direction to engage the keys,

wherein the cover includes a top portion,

wherein the top portion comprises transparent material,

wherein the top portion includes visual openings,

wherein the visual openings comprise a plurality of open slots formed in the top portion,

wherein the slots are separated by transparent material,

wherein the keypad is visible through the visual openings,

wherein the visual openings are elongated along the first direction,

wherein the top portion tapers horizontally outward along the first direction,

wherein the top portion extends closer to the keys along the first direction,

wherein the cover includes a pair of side wall portions,

wherein each side wall portion extends on a side of the top portion and bounds the first opening,

wherein each side wall portion tapers vertically downward along the first direction,

wherein the cover is configured so the keypad is not clearly visible through the cover except from a point of view of a person operating the machine at the user interface.

5. The apparatus according to claim 4 wherein the top portion includes a plurality of projections extend from the top portion, wherein the polurality of visual openings extend between the projections, wherein the plurality of visual openings are comprised of transparent material.

6. The apparatus according to claim 5 wherein the plurality of projections extend outwardly from the top portion.

7. The apparatus according to claim 4 wherein each side wall extends inwardly toward the top portion.

8. The apparatus according to claim 4 wherein the top portion is curved to extend closer to the keys with increasing distance from the second edge portions.

9. The apparatus according to claim 8 wherein the top portion curves downwardly outward toward each side wall.

10. The apparatus according to claim 4 wherein both the top portion and the side walls are part of integrally formed cover comprised of molded plastic material.

11. The apparatus according to claim 4 wherein the keypad includes a substantially planar surface, wherein the top portion extends higher than each side wall in a direction perpendicular to the planar surface.

12. Apparatus comprising:

an automated transaction machine user interface including:

a reader device,

a display device,

a keypad including a plurality of keys,

wherein the keypad includes a keypad front end and a keypad rear end,

a keypad cover overlying at least some of the keys,

wherein the cover bounds a user opening to the keypad,

wherein the user operating is sized to allow at least one manual digit to pass therethrough to access the keys,

wherein the cover includes a top portion,

wherein at least a part of the top portion is horizontally positioned intermediate the user opening and the display device,

wherein the at least a part of the top portion extends closer to the keys with increasing distance from the opening,

wherein the top portion includes a flexible flap, wherein the flap is bounded on each side by a slot, wherein a user is able to temporarily deform the cover by moving the flap in an upward direction,

wherein the cover includes two side walls,

wherein the two side walls comprise a first side wall and a second side wall,

wherein each side wall extends from the keypad front end to the keypad rear end,

wherein each side wall includes a lower portion,

wherein the first side wall lower portion is positioned on a first side of the keypad,

wherein the second side wall lower portion is positioned on a second side of the keypad opposed of the first side,

wherein each side wall includes a front portion and a rear portion,

wherein each side wall front portion bounds the user opening,

wherein each side wall rear portion narrows with increasing distance from the user opening,

wherein the top portion connects the two side walls,

wherein the at least a part of the top portion connects the side wall rear portions,

wherein the cover restricts viewing of the keypad by a person not at the user interface.
