Abstract

Method for estimating position information of base stations as well as terminals for three dimensional centralized real-time spectrum management to achieve high spectral efficiency. In one aspect of the invention, the method comprises i) understanding the position information of plurality of base stations, wherein the plurality of terminals and the base stations form a wireless network, ii) determining, at the central controller, position of a terminal via plurality of communication wirelessly between the base stations and a terminal and between the base station and the central controller, iii) applying network wide real time knowledge at the central controller to electronically steerable antennas to use a resource in a different direction then where it is used by other base stations to achieve frequency reuse of one.

Claims (33)

1. A method for finding locations of base stations and using location information of said base stations to increase frequency reuse in a wireless network comprising the steps of:

periodically scanning said base stations by each of a plurality of terminals on entry into the wireless network by ways of transmitting digital signals from said plurality of terminals to said base stations;

periodically estimating respective distances from said base stations by each of said plurality of terminals using transmitted digital signals;

periodically transmitting distance information including periodically estimated distances by each of said plurality of terminals to a central controller connected to the wireless network;

storing and processing said distance information by said central controller;

periodically determining relative locations of said base stations with respect to said plurality of terminals by said central controller using the stored and the processed distance information; and

electronically steering respective antennas of said base stations with OFDMA/TDMA/FDMA type of physical layer based on the periodically determined relative locations of said base stations and plurality of terminals to increase frequency reuse by a scheduler in said central controller.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of determining relative locations of said base stations and said plurality of terminals by said controller include the steps of cluster localizing, clustering transforming, and cluster optimizing.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the step of cluster localizing include the steps of selecting said base station as an origin of a local coordinate, and estimating possible positions of said base stations based on distance estimates reported by said terminals.

4. The method of claim 2 , further comprising a step of using a smart scheduling at said base stations to increase frequency reuse.

5. The method of claim 2 ,

the scheduler scheduling resource with respect to terminals bandwidth, and

the central controller informing other base stations not to schedule resource in a contending direction.

6. The method of claim 5 , whereby said base stations can be synchronized to transmit and receive frames in the same time and same frequency, whereby said other base stations are aware of said scheduling in a neighboring base station in a way to reduce interference.

7. A system for estimating a relative position of a base station and a terminal in a wireless network and using the relative position information to increase frequency reuse, comprising:

a central controller;

a plurality of terminals;

at least three base stations, said central controller in communication with each of said plurality of terminals and each of said at least three base stations using an OFDMA protocol;

said each of plurality of terminals including

means for periodically transmitting digital signals to each of said at least three base stations using timing signals or power dissipation on entry into the wireless network,

means for periodically estimating distance information from said each of at least three base stations, and

means for transmitting said periodically estimated distance information to said central controller; said central controller including

means for storing and processing said periodically estimated distance information,

means for periodically determining relative position of said at least three base stations and said plurality of terminals in said wireless network, and

means for coordinating a scheduler to increase the frequency reuse by said at least base station and said plurality of terminals with electronically steerable antennas of said at least three base stations based on said periodically determined relative position of said at least three base stations and said plurality of terminals.

8. A method for finding locations of base stations and using location information of said base stations to increase frequency reuse in a wireless network comprising the steps of:

periodically scanning said base stations by each of a plurality of terminals on entry into the wireless network by ways of transmitting digital signals from said plurality of terminals to said base stations;

periodically estimating respective distances from said base stations by each of said plurality of terminals using transmitted digital signals;

periodically transmitting distance information including periodically estimated distances by each of said plurality of terminals to a central controller connected to the wireless network;

storing and processing said distance information by said central controller;

periodically determining relative locations of said base stations with respect to said plurality of terminals by said central controller using the stored and the processed distance information;

constructing and refining non-overlapping regions and interference regions for each of said base stations and plurality of terminals based on the periodically determined relative locations of said base stations and said plurality of terminals by said central controller; and

assigning a resource to said base stations based on constructed and refined non-overlapping and interference regions.
