Spatial light modulator features
View Patent ↗An enhanced spatial light modulator (ESLM) array, a microelectronics patterning system and a projection display system using such an ESLM for heat-minimization and resolution enhancement during imaging, and the method for fabricating such an ESLM array. The ESLM array includes, in each individual pixel element, a small pixel mirror (reflective region) and a much larger pixel surround. Each pixel surround includes diffraction-grating regions and resolution-enhancement regions. During imaging, a selected pixel mirror reflects a selected-pixel beamlet into the capture angle of a projection lens, while the diffraction grating of the pixel surround redirects heat-producing unused radiation away from the projection lens. The resolution-enhancement regions of selected pixels provide phase shifts that increase effective modulation-transfer function in imaging. All of the non-selected pixel surrounds redirect all radiation energy away from the projection lens. All elements of the ESLM are fabricated by deposition, patterning, etching and other microelectronic process technologies.
1. A diffracting digital micromirror device (DDMD) spatial light modulator array for directing light rays from a light source into a projection means characterized by:
for each pixel position, a pixel element having a pixel mirror and a pixel mirror surround, such pixel element being physically re-positionable from a nonselected position to a selected position; and
said pixel mirror surround having a diffraction grating, such diffraction grating being related to the angle of illumination from the light source so as to be non-interfering with directing selected pixel beamlets into the active area of said projection means but also being non-interfering with directing non-selection beamlets away from said active area.
2. A DDMD spatial light modulator array, according to claim 1 further characterized in that:
said pixel mirror diffraction grating operates differently at differing wavelengths so as to minimize heat transfer into said projection means.
3. A DDMD spatial light modulator array, according to claim 1 further characterized in that:
said pixel mirror surround diffraction grating operates by phase reversal in alternating regions in the vicinity of the pixel mirror.
4. A DDMD spatial light modulator array, according to claim 1 further characterized in that:
said pixel mirror surround comprises serif means at the corners of the pixel mirror area, to enhance optical flux in such corners.
5. The method of fabricating a diffraction grating for elimination of heat build-up in a DMD pixel element having a less-than-element-size pixel mirror, comprising the following steps:
Step 1: Depositing a photoresist layer having a thickness equal to one-fourth of the wavelength of the light source to be used for illumination of the pixel;
Step 2: Patterning the resist to produce line-space patterns of dimensions appropriate for forming a diffraction grating which will shift radiation an amount sufficient to bypass the projection subsystem to be used for non-pixel portions of the pixel element; and
Step 3: Depositing a high-reflectivity layer on top of the patterned photoresist for pixel portions of the pixel element.
6. The method of fabricating a resolution enhancement feature in a DMD pixel element having a less-than-element-size pixel mirror reflective patch, comprising the following steps:
Step 1: Depositing a photoresist layer over the pixel element;
Step 2: Patterning the resist to produce appropriate configurations of the selected resolution enhancement feature, in a region to be opened up in the vicinity of the reflective patch, and developing to open up the region;
Step 3: Depositing a coating of a suitable phase-reversal material in the open region; and
Step 4: Removing the photoresist remaining on the pixel element by a chemical stripping process.
