Abstract

Techniques for generating customized rating systems for use in a DVR are described. According to one technique, a user submits a rating system definition that comprises two or more different ratings of the user's choosing. The rating system definition is stored. The rating system definition defines a customized ratings system. That system's creator and other users may then associate various entities, such as channels, series, and episodes, with ratings from the customized rating system. DVRs may use these associations between entities and ratings for various purposes. For example, DVRs may use these associations to allow a user to search for entities that satisfy specified rating criteria. For another example, DVRs may use these associations to restricting which entities and information about those entities can be displayed or recorded when the DVR is in a restricted mode of operation. Customized rating systems may be modified by multiple users in collaboration.

Claims (41)

1. A method for rating an entity based on a customized rating system,

the method comprising:

receiving a rating system definition that a first user submitted via a user interface of a first client device, wherein the rating system definition comprises two or more defined ratings, the first user being an author of the rating system definition;

receiving a request to associate an entity with at least one particular rating out of the two or more defined ratings;

in response to receiving the request, storing, on at least one storage device, an association between the entity and the particular rating;

periodically generating a community rating by combining a plurality of ratings that multiple users have associated with the entity, each of the plurality of ratings using at least one of the two or more defined ratings as defined in the rating system definition; and

periodically updating at least one client device that has downloaded and stored the rating system definition with the community rating of the entity, without the at least one client device to request for the community rating of the entity;

wherein the method is performed by one or more computing devices.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the entity is a television channel.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the entity is a movie.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the entity is a sporting event.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the entity is a television series.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the entity is a specific episode within a television series.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the entity is content downloadable over the Internet.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the entity is an advertisement.

9. An apparatus comprising:

a subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that receives a rating system definition that a first user submitted via a user interface of a first client device, wherein the rating system definition comprises two or more defined ratings, the first user being an author of the rating system definition;

a subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that receives a request to associate an entity with at least one particular rating out of the two or more defined ratings;

a subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that in response to receiving the request, stores, on at least one storage device, an association between the entity and the particular rating;

a subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that periodically generates a community rating by combining a plurality of ratings that multiple users have associated with the entity, each of the plurality of ratings using at least one of the two or more defined ratings as defined in the rating system definition; and

a subsystem, implemented at least partially in hardware, that periodically updates at least one client device that has downloaded and stored the rating system definition with the community rating of the entity, without the at least one client device to request for the community rating of the entity.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the entity is a television channel.

11. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the entity is a movie.

12. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the entity is a sporting event.

13. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the entity is a television series.

14. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the entity is a specific episode within a television series.

15. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the entity is content downloadable over the Internet.

16. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the entity is an advertisement.

17. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing one or more sequences of instructions, which instructions, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform steps that comprise:

receiving a rating system definition that a first user submitted via a user interface of a first client device, wherein the rating system definition comprises two or more defined ratings, the first user being an author of the rating system definition;

receiving a request to associate an entity with at least one particular rating out of the two or more defined ratings;

in response to receiving the request, storing, on at least one storage device, an association between the entity and the particular rating;

periodically generating a community rating by combining a plurality of ratings that multiple users have associated with the entity, each of the plurality of ratings using at least one of the two or more defined ratings as defined in the rating system definition; and

periodically updating at least one client device that has downloaded and stored the rating system definition with the community rating of the entity, without the at least one client device to request for the community rating of the entity.

18. The medium of claim 17 , wherein the entity is a television channel.

19. The medium of claim 17 , wherein the entity is a movie.

20. The medium of claim 17 , wherein the entity is a sporting event.

21. The medium of claim 17 , wherein the entity is a television series.

22. The medium of claim 17 , wherein the entity is a specific episode within a television series.

23. The medium of claim 17 , wherein the entity is content downloadable over the Internet.

24. The medium of claim 17 , wherein the entity is an advertisement.
