Abstract

A method is provided for pre-processing an image to be printed. The pre-processing is performed with a processor of a hand-held camera. The method involves the step of capturing an image with an image sensor of the camera including a Bayer color filter array (CFA). The captured image includes a plurality of color pixel blocks. The captured image is linearized using look-up tables to form a linearized image. The linearized image is planarized to form a planarized image including a plurality of image planes each relating to a respective color.

Claims (16)

1. A method for pre-processing, with a processor of a hand-held camera, an image to be printed; the method comprising the steps of:

capturing an image with an image sensor of the camera comprising a Bayer color filter array (CFA), the captured image comprising a plurality of color pixel blocks;

linearizing the captured image using look-up tables to form a linearized image; and

planarizing the linearized image to form a planarized image comprising a plurality of image planes each relating to a respective color.

2. A method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the step of capturing involves filtering a captured image to remove any aliasing artifacts.

3. A method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the step of capturing involves performing fixed pattern noise (FPN) suppression on a captured image.

4. A method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the step of linearizing involves translating 10-bit non-linear samples of a captured image into respective 8-bit linear samples.

5. A method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein each look-up table relates to a respective color.

6. A method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein each plane is a respective one of two possible sizes.

7. A method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein each color pixel block contains four color pixels arranged in two columns and two rows.

8. A method as claimed in claim 7 , wherein each color pixel block contains pixels relating to three colors.

9. A method as claimed in claim 8 , wherein the colors are red, green and blue.

10. A method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the image sensor has an aspect ratio of about 3:2.

11. A method as claimed in claim 1 , further including the step of storing a planarized image in a memory of the camera.

12. A computer-readable medium containing machine readable instructions for execution by the processor to perform the method of claim 1 .

13. A hand-held camera comprising the processor which is loaded with computer readable instructions to perform the method of claim 1 .
