Abstract

An automated banking machine is operative to enable users to operate the machine to carry out transactions such as the dispensing of cash. The exemplary machine provides audible instructions which are output through external loudspeakers, a headphone, or a handset. Rotation of a rotatable knob ( 372, 382 ) or other movable item causes the output of user selectable characters, transaction types and/or amounts corresponding to each respective position. The user selects the audible output produced in the current position of the knob for receipt by the machine as a transaction input by pressing on the knob. Characters and other selectable inputs corresponding to knob positions can be varied by the computer in the machine to reduce the risk of a criminal intercepting the user's inputs to the machine.

Claims (38)

1. At least one computer readable medium including computer executable instructions operative to cause at least one computer in an automated banking machine including a cash dispenser, to cause the machine to carry out a method comprising:

a) reading indicia from a card input by a user to the automated banking machine;

b) receiving a multicharacter code from the user through operation of the machine in a first mode, including the user moving a rotatable member in supporting connection with the machine to each of a plurality of different positions, and the machine providing to the user through the rotatable member outputs manually perceivable by the user indicating a plurality of characters, each character corresponding to a respective one of the plurality of positions of the rotatable member, wherein the output indicating at least one character is perceptively different from the outputs indicating the other characters; and

c) dispensing cash from the machine to the user responsive to the code input in (b) and the indicia read from the card in (a).

2. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 1 wherein (b) includes the machine providing to the user outputs that include a perceptible vibratory output indicating a position corresponding to a “5.”

3. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 2 wherein (b) includes providing an output through the rotatable member indicating a “9” responsive to rotation of the rotatable member in a first angular direction, and providing an output indicating a “0” responsive to rotation of the rotatable member in a second angular direction opposed of the first angular direction.

4. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 3 wherein in (b) providing to the user the output indicating the “9” includes providing an increased resistance to further rotation of the rotatable member in the first angular direction.

5. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 4 wherein in (b) providing to the user the output indicating the “0” includes providing a perceptible tactile sensation imitating a physical stop.

6. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 5 wherein the method further comprises;

d) receiving at least one command from the user through operation of the machine in a second mode, including the user moving the rotatable member to each of a plurality of different positions, and the machine providing to the user outputs perceivable by the user indicating a plurality of transaction options, each option corresponding to a respective one of the plurality of positions of the rotatable member.

7. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 6 wherein the method further comprises:

e) selectively changing between the first mode and the second mode of the machine responsive to rotation of the rotatable member.

8. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 7 wherein in (e) selectively changing from the first mode to the second mode is accompanied by an increase in resistance to further rotation of the rotatable member in the first angular direction followed by a decline in resistance to further rotation of the rotatable member in the first angular direction.

9. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 8 wherein the outputs indicating the positions corresponding to options in (d) are perceptibly different than the outputs indicating positions corresponding to characters in (b).

10. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 9 wherein the outputs indicating the options in (d) include audible outputs and the outputs indicating the characters in (b) include tactile outputs.

11. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 1 wherein (b) includes providing outputs to the user, including providing an output through the rotatable member indicating a “9” responsive to rotation of the rotatable member in a first angular direction, and providing an output indicating a “0” responsive to rotation of the rotatable member in a second angular direction opposed of the first direction.

12. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 11 wherein in (b) providing to the user the output indicating the “9” includes providing increased resistance to further rotation of the rotatable member in the first angular direction.

13. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 12 wherein in (b) providing to the user the output indicating the “0” includes providing increased resistance to further rotation of the rotatable member in the second angular direction.

14. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 13 wherein the rotatable member is axially movable and wherein in (b) receiving a multicharacter code from the user further includes the user moving the rotatable member axially to select a character to be included in the code.

15. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the at least one computer readable medium comprises a hard drive.

16. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 1 wherein the method further comprises:

d) receiving at least one command from the user through operation of the machine, including the user moving the rotatable member to each of a plurality of different positions, and the machine providing to the user outputs perceivable by the user indicating a plurality of transaction options, each option corresponding to a respective one of the plurality of positions of the rotatable member.

17. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 16 wherein the method further comprises:

e) selectively changing between the first mode in which characters are received from a user and a second mode of the machine in which selected transaction options are received from a user responsive to rotation of the rotatable member.

18. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 17 wherein the outputs indicating rotational positions corresponding to the options in (d) are manually perceptibly different than the outputs indicating the rotational positions corresponding to the characters in (b).

19. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 18 wherein the at least one computer readable medium comprises a hard drive.

20. At least one computer readable medium including computer executable instructions operative to cause at least one computer in an automated banking machine including a cash dispenser, to cause the machine to carry out a method comprising:

a) reading indicia from a card input by a user to the automated banking machine;

b) receiving inputs from the user through operation of the machine, including the user manually rotating a rotatable member in supporting connection with the machine to each of a plurality of different positions, and the machine providing to the user through the rotatable member outputs manually perceivable by the user indicating a plurality of input options, each input option corresponding to a respective one of the plurality of rotational positions of the rotatable member, and wherein the machine is selectively operative in a first mode wherein the input options correspond to characters and a second mode wherein the input options correspond to transaction options;

c) dispensing cash from the machine to the user responsive to the user inputs in (b).

21. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 20 wherein the rotatable member is axially movable and wherein in (b) receiving a multicharacter code from the user further includes moving the rotatable member axially to select a character to be included in the code.

22. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 21 , wherein the at least one computer readable medium comprises a hard drive.

23. At least one computer readable medium including computer executable instructions operative to cause at least one computer in an automated banking machine to cause the machine to carry out a method comprising:

a) reading indicia from a card input by a user to an automated banking machine;

b) receiving a multicharacter code from the user through operation of the machine in a first mode, including the user moving a rotatable member in supporting connection with the machine to each of a plurality of different positions, and the machine providing to the user through the rotatable member outputs manually perceivable by the user indicating a plurality of characters, each character corresponding to a respective one of the plurality of positions of the rotatable member, wherein the output indicating at least one character is perceptively different from the outputs indicating the other characters; and

c) carrying out a transaction through operation of the machine responsive to the code input in (b) and the indicia read from the card in (a).

24. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 23 wherein (c) comprises dispensing cash from the machine to the user.

25. The at least one computer readable medium of claim 24 , wherein the at least one computer readable medium comprises a hard drive.
