Abstract

The subject invention provides methods for creating wavefront aberrators with a desired refractive index profile that is stable against thermal and/or solar exposure. The invention further provides wavefront aberrators produced according to the methods described herein.

Claims (14)

1. A method of producing a wavefront aberrator with increased stability to thermal and/or solar exposure which comprises:

a. producing between two transparent plates a layer of polymerizable material comprising at least one polymer and one or more monomers wherein said polymerizable material has an initial refractive index;

b. providing a simultaneous thermal and a variable photo-stimulus to said polymerizable material to cause said polymerizable material to (i) undergo a variable pattern of polymerization without completely depleting said one or more monomers and (ii) attain a first intermediate variable refractive index profile;

c. promoting a diffusion process by heating the partially cured polymerizable material of (b) to cause diffusion of the uncured monomer from the lesser cured regions to the higher cured regions to attain a second intermediate variable refractive index profile; and

d. providing a simultaneous thermal and a uniform photo-stimulus to said partially cured polymerizable material of (c) to cure substantially all of the remaining one or more monomers to attain a final variable refractive index profile, wherein Zernike polynomial terms harmonic to those desired in said final variable refractive index profile are included in said initial refractive index profile to account for changes in the refractive index profile that occur during said diffusion process,

whereby said wavefront aberrator is stable to thermal and/or solar conditions.

2. The method of producing a wavefront aberrator, according to claim 1 , wherein said heating occurs over a pre-determined time period.

3. The method of producing a wavefront aberrator, according to claim 1 , wherein said diffusion process is monitored by real-time measurements of the wavefront aberrator.

4. The method of producing a wavefront aberrator, according to claim 1 , wherein said initial refractive index profile is created in such a way to account for changes in refractive index profile that occur during said diffusion process in order to obtain said final variable refractive index profile.

5. The method of producing a wavefront aberrator, according to claim 1 , wherein said initial refractive index profile has a smaller optical path difference than said final refractive index profile after the diffusion process.

6. The method of producing a wavefront aberrator, according to claim 1 , comprising selective radiation of the polymerizable material using a photomask.

7. The method of producing a wavefront aberrator, according to claim 1 , comprising selective radiation of the polymerizable material using a DLP system.

8. The method, according to claim 1 , wherein said heating is performed at 85° or higher.

9. The method, according to claim 1 , wherein the OPD after the diffusion process is at least twice the OPD before the diffusion process.
