Abstract

A well fluid processing system has a separator for separating heavier and lighter components of well fluid flowing from a subsea well and directing the lighter components to flow to a surface processing facility. The separator has a cylindrical chamber having a length at least ten times its diameter. A coalescing unit located in the chamber causes water droplets in the well fluid flowing through the tubes to coalesce into larger droplets. A dielectrophoresis unit having undulating sheets spaced close to each other is also located in the chamber. The sheets of the unit are supplied with an electrical potential to force the water droplets into predetermined passage portions to form high water content sections of liquid. Bypass valves allow backflushing of one of the separators while others continue to operate.

Claims (28)

1. A subsea-well fluid processing system, comprising:

a well fluid separator for separating heavier and lighter components of well fluid flowing from a well and directing the lighter components to flow to a surface processing facility; wherein the separator comprises:

a coalescing unit having a plurality of passages to which an electrical potential is applied to cause water droplets in the well fluid flowing through the passages to coalesce into larger droplets; and

a dielectrophoresis unit having a pair of undulating sheets spaced close to each other, the sheets being supplied with an electrical potential to force the water droplets in the well fluid into predetermined passage portions between the sheets to form high water content sections of liquid.

2. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the separator comprises:

a cylindrical chamber having a length at least ten times its diameter.

3. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the dielectrophoresis unit is located downstream from the coalescing unit within the separator.

4. A method of processing well fluid from a well, comprising:

(a) providing a well fluid separator having a plurality of passages and a pair of closely spaced undulating sheets, and connecting an inlet of the separator to the well;

(b) flowing well fluid from the well to the inlet of the separator, applying an electrical potential to passages to cause water droplets in the well fluid flowing through the passages to coalesce into larger droplets;

(c) applying an electrical potential to the undulating sheets spaced close to each other to force the water droplets in the well fluid into predetermined passage portions between the sheets to form high water content sections of liquid, thereby separating heavier and light components of the well fluid; and

(d) directing the lighter components to flow to a processing facility.

5. The method according to claim 4 , wherein the passages are located upstream of the sheets.

6. A separator for separating water and oil components of well fluid flowing from a well and directing the oil components to flow to a processing facility; the separator comprising:

a pressure vessel having an inlet for receiving well fluid made up of a mixture of oil and water, the vessel having an oil outlet and a water outlet;

a coalescing unit located in the vessel and having a plurality of parallel passages through which the well fluid from the inlet flows, the passages having an electrical potential to cause water droplets in the well fluid flowing through the passages to coalesce into larger droplets; and

a dielectrophoresis unit located in the vessel downstream from the coalescing unit and having at least two sheet members spaced apart from each other, defining a plurality of passage portions of varying widths therebetween for receiving well fluid flowing from the coalescing unit, the sheet members being supplied with an electrical potential between them to force the water droplets in the well fluid flowing between the sheet members into certain ones of the passage portions between the sheet members to form high water content sections of liquid;

a water collection area in the vessel in fluid communication with the water outlet for collecting and discharging water that drains from the units; and

an oil collection area in the vessel in fluid communication with the oil outlet for collecting and discharging oil that drains from the units.

7. The separator according to claim 6 , wherein:

each of the sheet members has an undulating shape, defining peaks and valleys; and

the peaks of the one of the sheet members align with the peaks of the other of the sheet members, the passage portions between the peaks being wider than the passage portions between the valleys.

8. The separator according to claim 7 , wherein:

the sheet members are oriented so that the wider and narrower passage portions alternate one above the other.

9. The separator according to claim 6 , wherein the coalescing unit comprises a bundles of tubes, each of the tubes defining one of the passages.

10. The separator according to claim 6 , wherein:

the pressure vessel is cylindrical, having a length at least ten times its diameter; and

the passages of the coalescing unit and the passage portions of the dielectrophoresis unit extend generally parallel with an axis of the vessel.
