Abstract

Systems and methods selectively stabilize tissue in the oral cavity. The systems and methods implant a first implant element in a bone region within an oral cavity and implant a second implant element in a tongue region within the oral cavity. The systems and methods resist posterior movement of the tongue within the oral cavity by coupling the first implant element to the second implant element within the oral cavity. By coupling, the systems and methods apply force, e.g., tension, between the first and second implant elements.

Claims (44)

1. An implant assembly comprising

a first implant element sized and configured for implantation in a mandible within an oral cavity,

a second implant element sized and configured for implantation in a tongue region within the oral cavity, and

a third implant element coupled to the first and second implant elements within the oral cavity, the third implant element being capable of applying force between the first and second implant elements such that the implant, in use, resists posterior movement of the tongue within the oral cavity.

2. An implant assembly according to claim 1

wherein the third implant element includes an elongated member that applies the force.

3. An implant assembly according to claim 1

wherein the third implant element includes an elongated member that pulls the second implant element toward the first implant element.

4. An implant assembly according to claim 1

wherein the third implant element includes an elongated member that applies tension between the first and second implant elements.

5. An implant assembly comprising

a first implant element sized and configured for implantation in a hyoid bone within an oral cavity,

a second implant element sized and configured for implantation in a tongue region within the oral cavity, and

a third implant element coupled to the first and second implant elements within the oral cavity, the third implant element being capable of applying force between the first and second implant elements such that the implant, in use, resists posterior movement of the tongue within the oral cavity.

6. An implant assembly according to claim 1 or 5

wherein the third implant element includes a component that applies force between the first and second implant elements in response to magnetic interaction with another component.

7. An implant assembly according to claim 1 or 5

wherein the second implant element pivots relative to the first implant element in response to the force applied by the third implant element.

8. An implant assembly comprising

a first implant element sized and configured for implantation in a mandible within an oral cavity,

a second implant element sized and configured for implantation in a tongue region within the oral cavity, and

a third implant element coupled to the first and second implant elements within the oral cavity, the third implant element being capable of applying tension between the first and second implant elements such that the implant, in use, resists posterior movement of the tongue within the oral cavity.

9. An implant assembly according to claim 8

wherein the third implant element includes a component that applies tension between the first and second implant elements in response to magnetic interaction with another component.

10. An implant assembly according to claim 8

wherein the third implant element includes an elongated member.

11. A method comprising

implanting a first implant element in a mandible within an oral cavity,

implanting a second implant element in a tongue region within the oral cavity, and

resisting posterior movement of the tongue within the oral cavity by coupling the first implant element to the second implant element within the oral cavity.

12. A method comprising

implanting a first implant element in a hyoid bone within an oral cavity,

implanting a second implant element in a tongue region within the oral cavity, and

resisting posterior movement of the tongue within the oral cavity by coupling the first implant element to the second implant element within the oral cavity.

13. A method according to claim 11 or 12

wherein resisting posterior movement of the tongue within the oral cavity includes a generation of a magnetic field affecting the first and second implant elements.

14. A method comprising

implanting a first implant element in a mandible within an oral cavity,

implanting a second implant element in a tongue region within the oral cavity, and

resisting posterior movement of the tongue within the oral cavity by placing into tension a third implant element between the second implant element and the first implant element within the oral cavity.

15. A method according to claim 14

wherein the third element comprises an elongated member placed into tension between the first and second implant elements.

16. A method according to claim 14

wherein by placing into tension a third implant element between the second implant element and the first implant element includes a generation of a magnetic field.
