Abstract

A method for network load shaping in a mobile radio network classifies data packets in a packet data stream according to a leaky bucket classification system and optionally delays the data packets in a network device within the mobile radio core network, in order to smooth burst and hence to reduce loss probabilities and the occurrence of delays in the forwarding of data packets from a data source, over the mobile radio network, to a mobile radio terminal in a simple and economical manner.

performing classification in such a way that a predetermined classification result is obtained for data packets of a series of consecutive data packets if transmission of the data packets in the packet data flow would exceed a maximum data rate. and

handling each data packet in the mobile radio network according to the classification result, the data packets being delayed in forwarding to the mobile radio terminal if the predetermined classification result has been assigned thereto, the data packets being delayed such that the predefined maximum data rate is maintained during transmission of data packets from the network device to the mobile radio terminal, wherein

the packet data assigned to the logical PDP context connection has an activated PDP context parameter assigned thereto,

the activated PDP context parameter is accessed in order to read out a maximum bit rate and assign a leak rate, and

a supplementary check is performed and the data packets are delayed only if the supplementary check shows that the data packets have a total length that exceeds a maximum bucket size.

13 . The method as claimed in claim 12 , wherein

the data packets are classified is reduced in such a way that no new bursts can arise between the network device and the aggregation point and/or the point at which the maximum available bandwidth is reduced.

14 . The method as claimed in claim 12 , wherein

the data packets are classified upstream from a General Packet Redo Service (GPRS) Gn or Gb interface.

15 . The method as claimed in claim 12 , wherein

the maximum data rate for traffic classes ‘Interactive’ and ‘Background’ is determined according to the maximum bit rate of 3GPP specification TS 23.107.

flow control according to 3GPP specification TS 08.18 is performed in the core network upstream of a Gb interface.

18 . The method as claimed in claim 17 , wherein

the data packets of the packet data flow are classified and forwarded or delayed in a SGSN following the flow control according to the 3GPP specification TS 08.18.

19 . The method as claimed in claim 12 , wherein

delayed data packets are buffered in a buffer having a predefined amount of storage space,

data packets for which insufficient storage space is available for buffering are discarded, and

the storage space is predefined in such a way that data packets can be buffered to accomodate bursts occurring in the core network.

20 . The method as claimed in claim 13 , wherein

the data packets are classified upstream from a General Packet Redo Service (GPRS) Gn or Gb interface.

21 . The method as claimed in claim 20 , wherein

the maximum data rate for the traffic classes ‘Interactive’ and ‘Background’ is determined according to the maximum bit rate of 3GPP specification TS 23.107.

22 . The method as claimed in claim 21 , wherein

the data packets are classified and handled in an SGSN or GGSN.

23 . The method as claimed in claim 22 , wherein

The data source is external to the mobile radio network,

network load shaping is performed according to 3GPP specification TS 23.107 (“traffic shaping”) in the radio access network and/or at the data source, and/or

flow control according to 3GPP specification TS 08.18 is performed in the core network upstream of a Gb interface.

24 . The method as claimed in claim 23 , wherein

the data packets of the packet data flow are classified and forwarded or delayed in a SGSN following the flow control according to the 3GPP specification TS 08.18.
