Abstract

An intervertebral implant, alone and in combination with an insertion tool for inserting same and a method for inserting same. The implant has upper and lower parts which have universal movement relative to each other. Each of the upper and lower parts also has a surface engaging an adjacent vertebrae. Each part has a keel extending from said surface into a cutout in the adjacent vertebrae, and each keel has an anterior opening recess therein. An insert tool has a pair of arms which are received in the recess of the keels through the anterior opening to securely hold and insert the implant. Projections and matching indentations in each arm and the base of its recess securely attached each arm within its keel.

Claims (30)

1. An intervertebral implant configured to be inserted along an insertion direction into an intervertebral space defined between a first vertebra and a second vertebra adjacent to the first vertebra, the intervertebral implant comprising:

an upper part having an outer side adapted to engage the first vertebra and a lower part having an outer side adapted to engage the second vertebra, wherein each of the upper and lower parts defines a leading end with respect to the insertion direction, and an opposed trailing end,

the upper and lower parts configured to be separate parts not integrally connected to each other and adapted to be in operative contact with each other for movement relative to each other, and

at least one of the upper and lower parts comprising an elongated keel extending out from the outer side of the respective upper or lower part and extending longitudinally from the trailing end toward the leading end, the keel having a recess that 1) is open to the respective outer side at its trailing end and 2) extends from its trailing end into the part along a direction toward the leading end and, the recess being closed within the keel at a front portion of the keel, the recess having an opening that removably receives an implant handling instrument that inserts the implant into the intervertebral space.

2. An implant according to claim 1 , wherein the recess runs along the anterior to posterior direction of the implant and the opening is at the anterior of the implant.

3. An implant according to claim 1 , including an insert connecting the upper and lower parts and having a rounded surface which mates with a rounded surface of the other of the upper and lower parts to provide said relative movement of the upper and lower parts relative to each other.

4. An implant according to claim 1 , wherein the keel is beveled at the leading end.

5. An implant according to claim 1 , wherein the recess runs along an anterior-posterior line of the implant.

6. An implant according to claim 1 , wherein both of the upper and lower parts have said recess.

7. An implant according to claim 6 , including an insert between the upper and lower parts, which insert engages such upper and lower parts so as to provide relative movement between the upper and lower parts.

8. An implant according to claim 7 , said insert connecting the upper and lower parts and having a rounded surface which mates with a rounded surface of the other of the upper and lower parts to provide said movement of the upper and lower parts relative to each other.

9. An intervertebral implant comprising an upper part having an outer side adapted to engage a first adjacent vertebra and a lower part having an outer side adapted to engage a second adjacent vertebra,

the upper and lower parts configured to be separate parts not integrally connected to each other and adapted to be in operative contact with each other for movement relative to each other, the upper and lower parts having a leading end and an opposed trailing end;

at least one of the upper and lower parts having an elongated, raised keel formed on an outer side and the keel extending longitudinally in the direction from the trailing end to the leading end and the recess being closed at a front portion, the raised keel configured to engage a respective one of the first and second adjacent vertebrae in a cutout formed in the respective vertebra, and

a recess formed in said keel and having an anterior opening proximate to the trailing end of said respective part, the recess extends into the keel toward the leading end and terminates within the keel at the front portion, the recess receives an implant handling instrument that inserts the implant between the first and second vertebrae.

10. An intervertebral implant according to claim 9 , wherein the recess runs along the anterior to posterior direction of the implant.

11. An intervertebral implant according to claim 9 , including an insert operatively connected to one of the upper and lower parts and having a rounded surface which mates with a rounded surface of the other of the upper and lower parts to provide said relative movement of the upper and lower parts relative to each other.

12. An intervertebral implant according to claim 9 , including an insert between the upper and lower parts, which insert engages the upper and lower parts so as to permit relative movement therebetween.

13. An intervertebral implant according to claim 9 , wherein both of the upper and lower parts include a raised keel and a recess formed therein.

14. An intervertebral implant configured to be inserted along an insertion direction into an intervertebral space defined between a first vertebra and a second vertebra adjacent to the first vertebra, the intervertebral implant comprising:

an upper part having an outer side adapted to engage the first vertebra and a lower part having an outer side adapted to engage the second vertebra, wherein each of the upper and lower parts defines a leading end with respect to the insertion direction, and an opposed trailing end;

the upper and lower parts configured to be separate parts not integrally connected to each other and adapted to be in operative contact with each other for movement relative to each other; and

at least one of the upper and lower parts including an elongated keel extending out from the outer side of the respective upper or lower part and extending longitudinally from the trailing end toward the leading end, the keel having a recess that is open to the respective outer side at its trailing end and extends from the trailing end into the part along a direction toward the leading end;

wherein the recess has an opening that removably receives an implant handling instrument that inserts the implant into the intervertebral space, and the recess is defined by a base and the base includes an engagement structure that is adapted to engage the implant handling instrument.

15. The implant of claim 14 , wherein the engagement structure includes an indentation formed in the base of the recess and the indentation is adapted to receive a projection on the handling instrument.

16. An intervertebral implant configured to be inserted along an insertion direction into an intervertebral space defined between a first vertebra and a second vertebra adjacent to the first vertebra, the intervertebral implant comprising:

an upper part having an outer side adapted to engage the first vertebra and a lower part having an outer side adapted to engage the second vertebra, wherein each of the upper and lower parts defines a leading end with respect to the insertion direction, and an opposed trailing end;

the upper and lower parts configured to be separate parts not integrally connected to each other and adapted to be in operative contact with each other for movement relative to each other; and

at least one of the upper and lower parts including an elongated keel extending out from the outer side of the respective upper or lower part and extending longitudinally from the trailing end toward the leading end, and the keel has a recess that 1) is open to the respective outer side at its trailing end and 2) extends from its trailing end into the part along a direction toward the leading end;

wherein the recess has an opening that removably receives the implant handling instrument and the keel is flared outwardly at the trailing end to facilitate the keel receiving the implant handling instrument.
