Abstract

A novel dense PTFE article in the form of a surface for a food preparation device is described in one embodiment, the surface being fabricated from a sheet of PTFE with a thermal resistance of 1.3° C. in 2 /W or less and having desirable tensile strength.

Claims (58)

1. An article for use in the preparation of cooked food, which article has a surface comprising a densified polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) sheet having a density of 2.0 g/cc or more, a tensile strength of at least 8000 psi in two orthogonal directions and a thermal resistance of up to 1.3° C. in 2 /W, wherein said article has a surface thickness of up to about 2 mil.

2. The article of claim 1 , wherein the PTFE sheet has a tensile strength of at least 10,000 psi in two orthogonal directions.

3. The article of claim 1 , wherein the PTFE sheet has a thermal resistance of up to 1.0° C. in 2 /W.

4. The article of claim 1 , wherein the PTFE sheet has a thermal resistance of up to 0.5° C. in 2 /W.

5. The article of claim 1 , wherein the article comprises metal.

6. The article of claim 5 , wherein the metal comprises at least one metal selected from the group consisting of aluminum and copper.

7. The article of claim 1 , in the form of a grill platen.

8. The article of claim 1 , in the form of cooking belt.

9. The article of claim 1 , in the form of a cooking sheet.

10. The article of claim 1 , wherein the PTFE sheet has a density of 2.1 g/cc or more.

11. The article of claim 1 , wherein said article further includes at least one additive.

12. The article of claim 1 , wherein said article has a surface thickness of up to about 0.5 mil.

13. The article of claim 1 , wherein said article has a surface thickness of up to about 0.2 mil.

14. An article for use in the preparation of cooked food, which article has a surface comprising a densified polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) sheet having a thermal resistance of up to 1.3° C. in 2 /W and a tear resistance of 1 lb/mil in at least one direction, wherein said article has a surface thickness of up to about 2 mil.

15. The article of claim 14 , wherein the PTFE sheet has a density of 2.0 g/cc or more.

16. The article of claim 14 , wherein the PTFE sheet has a density of 2.1 g/cc or more.

17. The article of claim 14 , wherein the PTFE sheet has a tensile strength of at least 8000 psi in two orthogonal directions.

18. The article of claim 14 , wherein the PTFE sheet has a tensile strength of at least 10,000 psi in at least one direction.

19. The article of claim 14 , wherein the PTFE sheet has a tensile strength of at least 10,000 psi in two orthogonal directions.

20. The article of claim 14 , wherein the PTFE sheet has a tensile strength of at least 15,000 psi in at least one direction.

21. The article of claim 14 , wherein the PTFE sheet has a tensile strength of at least 24,500 psi in at least one direction.

22. The article of claim 14 , wherein the article comprises metal.

23. The article of claim 22 , wherein the metal comprises at least one metal selected from the group consisting of aluminum and copper.

24. The article of claim 14 , in the form of a grill platen.

25. The article of claim 14 , in the form of cooking belt.

26. The article of claim 14 , in the form of a cooking sheet.

27. The article of claim 14 , wherein said article further includes at least one additive.

28. The article of claim 14 , wherein said article has a surface thickness of up to about 0.5 mil.

29. The article of claim 14 , wherein said article has a surface thickness of up to about 0.2 mil.

30. An article for use in the preparation of cooked food, which article has a surface comprising a densified polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) sheet having a thermal resistance of up to 1.3° C. in 2 /W and a tensile strength of at least 8000 psi in two orthogonal directions, wherein said article has a surface thickness of up to about 2 mil.

31. The article of claim 30 , wherein the PTFE sheet has a density of 2.0 g/cc or more.

32. The article of claim 30 , wherein the PTFE sheet has a density of 2.1 g/cc or more.

33. The article of claim 30 , wherein the PTFE sheet has a tensile strength of at least 10,000 psi in two orthogonal directions.

34. The article of claim 30 , wherein the article comprises metal.

35. The article of claim 34 , wherein the metal comprises at least one metal selected from the group consisting of aluminum and copper.

36. The article of claim 30 , in the form of a grill platen.

37. The article of claim 30 , in the form of cooking belt.

38. The article of claim 30 , in the form of a cooking sheet.

39. The article of claim 30 , wherein said article further includes at least one additive.

40. A grill cover sheet adapted for use in the preparation of cooked food, which sheet comprises densified polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) sheet having a density of 2.0 g/cc or more, a tensile strength of at least 8000 psi in two orthogonal directions, a thermal resistance of up to 1.3° C. in 2 /W and a tear resistance of 1 lb/mil in at least one direction, wherein said article has a surface thickness of up to about 2 mil.

41. The grill cover sheet of claim 40 , wherein said sheet further comprises at least one attachment component comprising a tunnel.

42. The grill cover sheet of claim 40 , wherein said article further includes at least one additive.

43. An article for use in the preparation of cooked food, which article has a surface comprising a densified polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) sheet having a thermal resistance of up to 1.3° C. in 2 /W and a tensile strength of at least 10,000 psi in at least one direction, wherein said article has a surface thickness of up to about 2 mil.

44. The article of claim 43 , wherein the PTFE sheet has a tensile strength of at least 15,000 psi in at least one direction.

45. The article of claim 43 , wherein the PTFE sheet has a tensile strength of at least 24,500 psi in at least one direction.

46. The article of claim 43 , wherein said article further includes at least one additive.

47. The article of claim 43 , wherein said article has a surface thickness of up to about 0.5 mil.

48. The article of claim 43 , wherein said article has a surface thickness of up to about 0.2 mil.

49. An article for use in the preparation of cooked food, which article has a surface comprising a densified polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) sheet having a density of 2.0 g/cc or more, a tensile strength of at least 10,000 psi in at least one direction and a thermal resistance of up to 1.3° C. in 2 /W, wherein said article has a surface thickness of up to about 2 mil.

50. The article of claim 49 , wherein the PTFE sheet has a tensile strength of at least 15,000 psi in at least one direction.

51. The article of claim 49 , wherein the PTFE sheet has a thermal resistance of up to 1.0° C. in 2 /W.

52. The article of claim 49 , wherein the PTFE sheet has a thermal resistance of 0.5° C. in 2 /W.

53. The article of claim 49 , wherein the article comprises metal.

54. The article of claim 53 , wherein the metal comprises at least one metal selected from the group consisting of aluminum and copper.

55. The article of claim 49 , in the form of a grill platen.

56. The article of claim 49 , in the form of cooking belt.

57. The article of claim 49 , in the form of a cooking sheet.

58. The article of claim 49 , wherein said article further includes at least one additive.
