Abstract

Ophthalmic compositions suitable for use as artificial tears or as vehicles for ophthalmic drugs are disclosed. The compositions contain a combination of two polymers that have a synergistic effect on viscosity.

Claims (27)

1. An aqueous composition suitable for ophthalmic administration comprising a viscosity enhancing amount of combination of two polymers having a synergistic effect on the composition's viscosity and wherein the combination of two polymers is selected from the group consisting of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and guar gum; a carboxyvinyl polymer and guar gum; and hyaluronic acid and guar gum, provided that if the composition comprises a carboxyvinyl polymer then the composition does not contain sodium chloride or boric acid wherein the total concentration of the two polymers ranges from 0.05-3.0% (w/w); wherein the viscosity of the composition is greater than 150% of the simple sum of two respective single polymer solutions containing only one of the two polymers.

2. The composition of claim 1 wherein the combination of two polymers is a combination of a hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and guar gum.

3. The composition of claim 1 wherein the combination of two polymers is a combination of a carboxyvinyl polymer and guar gum.

4. The composition of claim 1 wherein the combination of two polymers is a combination of hyaluronic acid and guar gum.

5. The composition of claim 3 wherein the carboxyvinyl polymer is a polymer of acrylic acid crosslinked with allyl sucrose or allylpentaerythritol, the hydroxypropyl methylcellulose has a number average molecular weight of approximately 86,000 dalton, the guar gum is hydroxypropyl guar, and the hyaluronic acid is sodium hyaluronate.

6. The composition of claim 1 wherein the total concentration of the two polymers ranges from 0.2-2.0% (w/w).

7. The composition of claim 1 further comprising an ingredient selected from the group consisting of pharmaceutically acceptable buffering agents; preservatives; tonicity-adjusting agents; surfactants; solubilizing agents; stabilizing agents; comfort-enhancing agents; emollients; pH-adjusting agents; and lubricants.

8. The composition of claim 1 further comprising an ophthalmic drug.

9. The composition of claim 8 wherein the ophthalmic drug is selected from the group consisting of anti-glaucoma agents; anti-angiogenesis agents; anti-infective agents; non-steroidal and steroidal anti-inflammatory agents; growth factors; immunosuppressant agents; and anti-allergic agents.

10. An aqueous composition suitable for ophthalmic administration comprising:

an ophthalmic drug; and

a viscosity enhancing amount of combination of two polymers having a synergistic effect on the composition's viscosity and wherein the combination of two polymers is selected from the group consisting of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and guar gum; a carboxyvinyl polymer and guar gum; and hyaluronic acid and guar gum;

wherein the total concentration of the two polymers ranges from 0.2-2.0% (w/w); wherein the viscosity of the composition is greater than 150% of the simple sum of two respective single polymer solutions containing only one of the two polymers.

11. The composition of claim 10 provided that if the composition comprises a carboxyvinyl polymer then the composition does not contain sodium chloride or boric acid.

12. The composition of claim 10 wherein the combination of two polymers is a combination of a hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and guar gum.

13. The composition of claim 10 wherein the combination of two polymers is a combination of a carboxyvinyl polymer and guar gum.

14. The composition of claim 10 wherein the combination of two polymers is a combination of hyaluronic acid and guar gum.

15. The composition of claim 13 wherein the carboxyvinyl polymer is a polymer of acrylic acid crosslinked with allyl sucrose or allylpentaerythritol, the hydroxypropyl methylcellulose has a number average molecular weight of approximately 86,000 dalton, the guar gum is hydroxypropyl guar, and the hyaluronic acid is sodium hyaluronate.

16. The composition of claim 10 further comprising an ingredient selected from the group consisting of pharmaceutically acceptable buffering agents; preservatives; tonicity-adjusting agents; surfactants; solubilizing agents; stabilizing agents; comfort-enhancing agents; emollients; agents; and lubricants.

17. The composition of claim 10 wherein the ophthalmic drug is selected from the group consisting of anti-glaucoma agents; anti-angiogenesis agents; anti-infective agents; non-steroidal and steroidal anti-inflammatory agents; growth factors; immunosuppressant agents; and anti-allergic agents.

18. An aqueous composition suitable for ophthalmic administration comprising:

an ophthalmic drug selected from the group consisting of anti-glaucoma agents; anti-angiogenesis agents; anti-infective agents; non-steroidal and steroidal anti-inflammatory agents; growth factors; immunosuppressant agents; and anti-allergic agents;

a preservative; and

a viscosity enhancing amount of combination of two polymers having a synergistic effect on the composition's viscosity and wherein the combination of two polymers is selected from the group consisting of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and guar gum; a carboxyvinyl polymer and guar gum; and hyaluronic acid and guar gum;

wherein the total concentration of the two polymers ranges from 0.2-2.0% (w/w); wherein the viscosity of the composition is greater than 150% of the simple sum of two respective single polymer solutions containing only one of the two polymers and wherein the pH of the composition is in the range of 6-8 and wherein the composition is suitable for topical administration.
