Abstract

A method and system for controlling an output signal power level of a wireless transmitter can be created by detecting the signal power level of the transmitter with a detector, selectively attenuating the output signal power level with an attenuator having variable attenuation levels, and monitoring the output signal power level and comparing the output signal power level, as determined by the detector, to a predetermined threshold with a processor. The processor preferably controls the attenuator in accordance with the comparison of the output signal power level and the predetermined threshold.

Claims (25)

1. A wireless communication device comprising:

an indoor unit configured to provide communications to a user device, the indoor unit having an indoor unit controller configured to control a power level of communications provided from the indoor unit;

an outdoor unit configured to transmit and receive wireless communications, the outdoor unit containing:

an attenuator configured to attenuate a communication signal received from the indoor unit as an input signal to be transmitted by the outdoor unit;

a detector configured to detect a power level of the input signal received from the indoor unit;

a detector configured to detect a power level of an output signal output by the outdoor unit as an output signal to be transmitted; and

an outdoor unit controller configured to receive the power level of the output signals and power level of the input signals and to control the attenuator to attenuate the input signal to cause the output signal to obtain a predetermined power level,

wherein the outdoor unit controller further provides settings for the attenuator used to attenuate the input signal to the indoor unit controller.

2. The wireless communication device according to claim 1 , wherein the outdoor unit controller instructs the attenuator to attenuate the input signal if the output signal exceeds that predetermined power level.

3. The wireless communication device according to claim 1 , wherein the indoor unit controller does not increase the power of the input signal to the outdoor unit if outdoor unit controller attenuates the input signal.

4. The wireless communication device according to claim 1 , wherein the attenuator is a step attenuator.

5. The wireless communication device according to claim 1 , wherein the power of the output signal is controlled without requiring real time communication from the indoor unit.

6. A method for controlling a wireless communication device comprising the steps of:

controlling the power level of a communication provided from an indoor unit using an indoor unit controller contained in the indoor unit, the indoor unit being configured to provide communications to a user device;

receiving communications from the indoor unit at an outdoor unit as an input signal to be transmitted by the outdoor unit;

processing the input signal in the outdoor unit, including the steps of:

detecting a power level of the input signal received from the indoor unit;

detecting a power level of an output signal output by the outdoor unit as an output signal to be transmitted;

determining if the power level of the output signal exceeds a predetermined power level, and

if the power level of the output signal does exceed the predetermined power level, instructing an attenuator to attenuate the input signal in the outdoor unit to cause the output signal to obtain a predetermined power level,

wherein the outdoor unit controller further provides settings for the attenuator used to attenuate the input signal to the indoor unit controller.

7. The method for controlling a wireless communication device according to claim 6 , wherein the outdoor unit controller instructs the attenuator to attenuate the input signal if the output signal exceeds that predetermined power level.

8. The method for controlling a wireless communication device according to claim 6 , wherein the indoor unit controller does not increase the power of the input signal to the outdoor unit if outdoor unit controller attenuates the input signal.

9. The method for controlling a wireless communication device according to claim 6 , wherein the attenuator is a step attenuator.

10. The method for controlling a wireless communication device according to claim 6 , wherein the power of the output signal is controlled without requiring real time communication from the indoor unit.
