Abstract

A method for recovering from discontinuous reception (DRX) timing de-synchronization between the UE and the eNB in an LTE_ACTIVE state having the steps of: the eNB detecting DRX timing de-synchronization; transmitting an indicator to a User Equipment (UE) to resume continuous reception; and waiting for an indication from the UE of whether a Continuous Reception Response or Continuous Reception Notification was received.

Claims (36)

1. A method for Discontinuous Reception (DRX) operation, comprising:

while a user equipment (‘UE’) is in an active mode, waking up a receiver of the UE at a wake up time, the wake up time corresponding to a radio frame number equal to a radio frame offset plus N times a DRX interval, wherein N is an integer greater than or equal to zero;

wherein the UE checks whether data addressed for the UE is available from a network element at the wake up time.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising, transmitting at least one of the radio frame offset and the DRX interval by radio resource control (RRC).

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the radio frame offset is calculated from a subscriber or UE identity.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the identity is the International Mobile Station Identity.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of:

checking, at the UE, for a Continuous Reception Command from the network element.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising the steps of:

if a Continuous Reception Command has been received,

deactivating discontinuous reception (‘DRX’);

sending a Continuous Reception Response to the network element.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising the step of:

if no Continuous Reception Command has been received,

turning off the receiver.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising automatically increasing DRX interval length if no data is received after a predetermined time period.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the predetermined time period is based on a set number of DRX cycles.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the wake up time is preconfigured.

11. A user equipment configured for discontinuous reception operation comprising:

a communications subsystem having a receiver; and

a processor;

wherein the user equipment is configured to, “while in active mode,” wake up the receiver at a wake up time, the wake up time corresponding to a radio frame number equal to a radio frame offset plus N times a DRX interval, where N is an integer greater than or equal to zero; and

wherein the user equipment is further configured to check whether data addressed for the user equipment is available from a network element at the wake up time.

12. The user equipment of claim 11 , wherein the communications subsystem and processor are further configured to receive at least one of the radio frame offset and DRX interval by radio resource control.

13. The user equipment of claim 11 , wherein the radio frame offset is calculated from a subscriber identity or an identity of the user equipment.

14. The user equipment of claim 13 , wherein the user equipment identity is the International Mobile Station Identity.

15. The user equipment of claim 11 , wherein the communications subsystem is further configured to check for a Continuous Reception Command from the network element.

16. The user equipment of claim 15 , wherein the communication subsystem is further configured to deactivate discontinuous reception (‘DRX’) and send a continuous Reception Response to the network element if a Continuous Reception Command has been received.

17. The user equipment of claim 16 , wherein the communication subsystem is further configured to turn off the receiver if no Continuous Command has been received.

18. The user equipment of claim 11 , wherein the user equipment is further configured to automatically increase DRX interval length if no data is received after a predetermined time period.

19. The user equipment of claim 18 , wherein the predetermined time period is based on a set number of DRX cycles.

20. The user equipment of claim 11 , wherein the wake up time is preconfigured.

21. An enhanced Node B (‘eNB’) configured for discontinuous reception operation comprising:

a communications subsystem configured to communicate with a user equipment, while the user equipment is in active mode, at a wake up time, the wake up time corresponding to a radio frame number equal to a radio frame offset plus N times a DRX interval, where N is an integer greater than or equal to zero;

wherein the communications subsystem is further configured to send data to the UE at the wake up time.

22. The eNB of claim 21 , wherein the communication comprises transmitting at least one of the radio frame offset and the DRX interval by radio resource control.
