Abstract

A chromatography cartridge and method of manufacturing same. A chromatography cartridge of the present invention can include a tubular housing having an open end and an inner surface, and a plug. The plug can be positioned within the open end of the tubular housing and can have an outer circumferential surface, a substantial portion of the outer circumferential surface being fused to the inner surface of the tubular housing. A method for manufacturing a chromatography cartridge can include coupling at least a portion of the outer surface of the plug to at least a portion of the inner surface of the tubular housing in response to rotating at least one of the plug and the tubular housing about the longitudinal axis with respect to the other of the plug and the tubular housing.

Claims (24)

1. A chromatography column comprising:

an elongated tubular housing having a first end, a second end, an exterior surface and an interior surface, the first end integrally formed with the housing and including a port defining a fluid inlet, the interior surface defining an interior space;

a first frit positioned adjacent the first end in the interior space;

a second fit positioned adjacent the second end in the interior space, the second fit including a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface;

chromatography medium positioned between the first fit and the second fit, wherein at least a portion of the first surface of the second frit is in contact with the chromatography medium; and

a cap spin-welded to the tubular housing to close the second end, the cap including a port defining a fluid outlet, the cap including an exterior surface, a plurality of radially extending ribs on the exterior surface and a bottom surface, wherein at least a portion of the bottom surface is in contact with the second surface of the second frit, and wherein the second frit is positioned by the cap to densely pack the chromatography medium and to substantially prevent a liquid phase from channeling through the chromatography medium.

2. The chromatography column of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the cap is spin-welded to the interior surface of the tubular housing.

3. The chromatography column of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the cap is spin-welded to the exterior surface of the tubular housing.

4. The chromatography column of claim 1 , wherein a first portion of the cap is spin-welded to the exterior surface of the tubular housing and a second portion of the cap is spin-welded to the interior surface of the tubular housing.

5. The chromatography column of claim 1 , wherein the cap includes a shroud at least partially in contact with the exterior surface of the tubular housing.

6. The chromatography column of claim 5 , wherein the shroud includes an interior surface, and wherein a portion of the interior surface of the shroud is spin-welded to the exterior surface of the tubular housing.

7. The chromatography column of claim 1 , wherein the bottom surface of the cap is oriented substantially parallel to the second surface of the second frit.

8. A chromatography column comprising:

an elongated tubular housing having a first end, a second end, an exterior surface and an interior surface, the first end integrally formed with the housing and including a port defining a fluid outlet, the interior surface defining an interior space;

a first frit positioned adjacent the first end in the interior space;

a second frit positioned adjacent the second end in the interior space, the second frit including a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface;

chromatography medium positioned between the first fit and the second frit, wherein at least a portion of the first surface of the second fit is in contact with the chromatography medium; and

a cap spin-welded to the tubular housing to close the second end, the cap including a port defining a fluid inlet, the cap including an exterior surface, a plurality of radially extending ribs on the exterior surface and a bottom surface, wherein at least a portion of the bottom surface is in contact with the second surface of the second fit, and wherein the second frit is positioned by the cap to densely pack the chromatography medium and to substantially prevent a liquid phase from channeling through the chromatography medium.

9. The chromatography column of claim 8 , wherein a portion of the cap is spin-welded to the interior surface of the tubular housing.

10. The chromatography column of claim 8 , wherein a portion of the cap is spin-welded to the exterior surface of the tubular housing.

11. The chromatography column of claim 8 , wherein a first portion of the cap is spin-welded to the exterior surface of the tubular housing and a second portion of the cap is spin-welded to the interior surface of the tubular housing.

12. The chromatography column of claim 8 , wherein the cap includes a shroud at least partially in contact with the exterior surface of the tubular housing.

13. The chromatography column of claim 12 , wherein the shroud includes an interior surface, and wherein a portion of the interior surface of the shroud is spin-welded to the exterior surface of the tubular housing.

14. The chromatography column of claim 8 , wherein the bottom surface of the cap is oriented substantially parallel to the second surface of the second frit.
