Abstract

Tissue visualization and manipulation systems are described herein. Such a system may include a deployment catheter and an attached imaging hood deployable into an expanded configuration. In use, the imaging hood is placed against or adjacent to a region of tissue to be imaged in a body lumen that is normally filled with an opaque bodily fluid such as blood. A translucent or transparent fluid, such as saline, can be pumped into the imaging hood until the fluid displaces any blood, thereby leaving a clear region of tissue to be imaged via an imaging element in the deployment catheter. Additionally, any number of therapeutic tools can also be passed through the deployment catheter and into the imaging hood for treating the tissue region of interest.

Claims (25)

1. A method for imaging an immersed region of tissue, comprising:

translating a hood projecting distally from a deployment catheter relative to a sheath such that the hood reconfigures from a constrained state within the sheath to an unconstrained state external to the sheath;

positioning an opening defined by the hood against or adjacent to the region of tissue to be imaged;

urging a translucent fluid into the hood via the deployment catheter such that an opaque fluid is displaced from within the hood and is purged through the opening to an environment external to the hood while the opening is maintained against the region of tissue; and

visualizing the region of tissue through the translucent fluid via a visualization element positioned on the hood within or adjacent to an open area defined by the hood such that the element is in fluid communication through the opening with the environment, where the visualization element is moved out of alignment with the deployment catheter when in the constrained state to an off-axis position relative to a longitudinal axis of the deployment catheter when in the unconstrained state.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein positioning an opening defined by the hood comprises advancing the deployment catheter intravascularly into a chamber of a heart.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein translating comprises deploying the hood from a low-profile delivery configuration into an expanded deployed configuration.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein positioning an opening defined by the hood comprises steering the deployment catheter to the region of tissue.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein positioning an opening defined by the hood comprises stabilizing a position of the hood relative to the tissue.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein urging a translucent fluid comprises pumping the translucent fluid into the hood through a fluid delivery lumen defined through the deployment catheter.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein urging a translucent fluid comprises urging saline, plasma, water, or perfluorinated liquid into the hood such that blood is displaced from the hood.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein visualizing the region of tissue further comprises illuminating the region of tissue.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising treating the region of tissue with a therapeutic tool advanced through the deployment catheter.

10. The method of claim 1 further comprising repositioning the hood to a second region of tissue to be imaged.

11. The method of claim 9 wherein treating the region comprises advancing a guidewire into or through the hood.

12. The method of claim 11 further comprising guiding a movement of the hood via the guidewire.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein urging a translucent fluid comprises introducing the fluid through at least one lumen defined through the catheter.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein urging a translucent fluid comprises controlling a flow rate of the fluid into the hood via a processor.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein visualizing the region of tissue comprises recording a location of the region of tissue via a processor.

16. The method of claim 1 wherein visualizing the region of tissue comprises recording an image of the region of tissue via a processor.

17. The method of claim 1 wherein the hood reconfigures from a constrained state within the sheath to the unconstrained state external to the sheath by elastically self-expanding.

18. The method of claim 1 wherein the visualization element comprises at least one optical fiber, CCD imager, or CMOS imager.

19. The method of claim 1 wherein visualizing further comprises illuminating the open area.

20. The method of claim 19 wherein illuminating comprises illuminating the open area via one or more light emitting diodes.

21. The method of claim 1 wherein translating a hood comprises translating a non-inflatable membrane which defines the open area of the hood.
