Abstract

A method of verifying availability of a mobile subscriber station that is in an idle-mode includes requesting to a base station by the mobile subscriber station to enter an idle-mode, wherein the base station is associated with a paging group comprising a plurality of base stations, and receiving from the base station an idle-mode response command to enter the idle-mode. The method also includes receiving from the base station a paging command comprising an action code associated with performing ranging while the mobile subscriber station is in the idle-mode to verify availability of the mobile subscriber station with respect to the base station, wherein if the ranging is not successfully performed with the base station during a predetermined period, the base station continues to transmit the paging command until a paging retrial count reaches a predetermined threshold.

Claims (16)

1. A method of verifying availability of a mobile subscriber station (MSS) that is in an idle mode, the method comprising:

receiving a request message from the MSS, the request message requesting to enter idle mode;

transmitting a response message to the MSS, the response message including paging information that further includes information related to at least one of paging group identification, paging cycle, and paging offset;

transmitting a paging message to the MSS, the paging message including an action code that instructs the MSS to perform one of a ranging operation and network entry;

retransmitting the paging message to the MSS if a ranging request message is not received from the MSS until a next paging listening interval, wherein a predefined paging retry counter is decremented by one every time the paging message is retransmitted;

determining that the MSS is unavailable if the predefined paging retry counter reaches zero; and

transmitting a backbone message over a backbone network to all base stations (BS) in a same paging group to remove the unavailable MSS from each list of MSSs in idle mode.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the paging message includes information related to the presence of downlink traffic when to terminate idle mode.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the paging message is received periodically.

4. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein the unavailable MSS is removed from a list of MSS in idle mode maintained by a paging controller if the predefined paging retrial counter decreases to zero.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the paging controller is located in a specific BS.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the request message includes preferred session information related to information that the MSS prefers the BS to retain for expedited future re-entry to a network.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the preferred session information includes at least one of verification information, internet protocol address information, MSS capability, management connection identification, or information essential to maintaining network service.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the response message includes selected session information, which includes certain MSS service and operational information used to expedite future MSS network re-entry from idle mode.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the request message is de-registration request message, the response message is de-registration command message, and the paging message is broadcast paging message.
