MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGEMENT SYSTEM AND METHOD
A system, method and computer program for programming a medical device to administer a medication to a patient includes the medical device, a scanner that may be associated with a point of care (POC) system, and a medication management unit (MMU). A computer in the POC system can directly program the medical device with the permission of the MMU after a full “five rights” check or the “right patient” check can be delayed until after the pump program is downloaded. Other workflows are disclosed for programming the medical device in manual, semi-automatic and automatic modes, with safety checks incorporated at various points.
1 . A method for programming a medical device, comprising the steps of:
receiving at a first computer, in communication with a second computer that is in communication with the medical device, at least a medical device identifier associated with the medical device and additional identification information selected from a group of identification information consisting of a caregiver identifier, a medication container identifier, and a patient identifier;
transmitting programming information for the medical device associated with the medical device identifier from the first computer to the second computer;
sending via at least one of the first computer, the second computer, and the medical device a prompt to download the program information from the second computer to the medical device;
in response to the prompt, initiating on the medical device a request to download the programming from the second computer to the medical device to operate the medical device; and
downloading the programming information from the second computer to the medical device in response to the request.
2 . A system for programming a medical device, comprising:
a first computer including an associated memory for storing programming information for administering a medication to a patient;
a second computer in communication with the first computer and the medical device;
input means for inputting identification information, the input means being associated with one of the first computer, the second computer and the medical device;
wherein the input means captures and supplies to the first computer at least a medical device identifier associated with the medical device and additional identification information selected from a group of identification information consisting of a caregiver identifier, a medication container identifier, and a patient identifier;
wherein the first computer transmits to the second computer programming information for programming the medical device associated with the medical device identifier;
wherein at least one of the first computer, the second computer and the medical device prompts a user to initiate a request on the medical device to download the programming information from the second computer to the medical device; and
wherein the second computer downloads the programming information to the medical device in response to the request.
