Abstract

An apparatus includes an elongate member including a cutting edge disposed at a distal end portion of the elongate member. The cutting edge is configured to cut a portion of an implant when the elongate member moves relative to the implant.

Claims (26)

1. A method for moving an implant from an expanded configuration to a retracted configuration, comprising:

coupling a distal end portion of an elongate body to an implant when the implant is already in the expanded configuration and disposed within a patient's body, the distal end portion of the elongate body comprising a cutting edge;

cutting a portion of the implant with the cutting edge to form a cut in the implant;

changing the implant from the expanded configuration to the retracted configuration by deforming the implant proximate the cut.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the implant is disposed within the body between adjacent spinous processes.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising inserting percutaneously the elongate member into the body before the coupling.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein:

the elongate body includes first and second elongate members, the second elongate member being disposed within the first elongate member;

the coupling includes removably coupling the second elongate member to the implant.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein an implant support portion is disposed at a distal end of the first elongate member and the second elongate member extends through the first elongate member and the implant support portion and wherein coupling a distal end of the elongate body to the implant includes:

receiving the implant in a recess formed in the implant support portion;

coupling a distal end of the second elongate member to a distal end of the implant.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein:

the elongate body includes first and second elongate members, the second elongate member being disposed within the first elongate member;

the coupling includes removably coupling a distal end portion of the second elongate member to the implant;

the cutting includes moving the second elongate member in a proximal direction within the first elongate member, while the second elongate member is coupled to the implant, such that the cutting edge engages the portion of the implant.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the cutting includes cutting a portion of a retention member of the implant and wherein changing the implant further comprises moving the implant in a distal direction past the spinous processes such that as the retention member passes the spinous processes, the retention member bends inwardly towards a center line of the implant.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the cutting includes cutting a retention member of the implant.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein:

the implant includes an outer member having a tubular body and an inner member having a cylindrical body, the inner member being disposed within the tubular body of the outer member;

the cutting includes cutting a portion of the outer member of the implant.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the cutting includes moving the cutting edge relative to the elongate body such that the portion of the implant is cut.

11. The method of claim 1 further comprising removing the implant from the body after the cutting.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein:

the implant includes an outer member having a tubular body and an inner member having a cylindrical body, the inner member being disposed within the tubular member;

the cutting includes cutting a portion of the inner member of the implant.
