Abstract

A continuously variable transmission is disclosed for use in rotationally or linearly powered machines and vehicles. The single axle transmission provides a simple manual shifting method for the user. An additional embodiment is disclosed which shifts automatically dependent upon the rotational speed of the wheel. Further, the practical commercialization of traction roller transmissions requires improvements in the reliability, ease of shifting, function and simplicity of the transmission. The disclosed transmission may be used in vehicles such as automobiles, motorcycles, and bicycles. The transmission may, for example, be driven by a power transfer mechanism such as a sprocket, gear, pulley or lever, optionally driving a one way clutch attached at one end of the main shaft.

Claims (28)

1. A mechanism for facilitating the adjustment of a speed ratio of a continuously variable transmission (CVT), the mechanism comprising:

a shift rod positioned along a longitudinal axis of the CVT;

a sleeve mounted coaxially with the longitudinal axis; and

wherein the shift rod is coupled to the sleeve to cause an axial translation of the sleeve.

2. The mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the shift rod is adapted to translate axially.

3. The mechanism of claim 1 , further comprising a shift pin coupled to the shift rod and to the sleeve.

4. The mechanism of claim 1 , wherein the shift rod comprises a threaded end.

5. The mechanism of claim 1 , further comprising a shaft having a bore adapted to receive the shift rod.

6. The mechanism of claim 5 , wherein the sleeve is mounted coaxially about the shaft.

7. The mechanism of claim 6 , wherein the shaft comprises a slot adapted to allow a coupling between the shift rod with the sleeve.

8. The mechanism of claim 7 , wherein the coupling comprises a shift pin.

9. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) comprising:

an elongated shift rod positioned along a longitudinal axis of the CVT;

a sleeve mounted coaxially with the longitudinal axis; and

wherein the shift rod is operationally coupled to the sleeve such that an actuation of the shift rod causes an axial translation of the sleeve.

10. The CVT of claim 9 , wherein the shift rod is adapted to translate axially.

11. The CVT of claim 9 , wherein the shift rod comprises a threaded portion.

12. The CVT of claim 9 , further comprising a hollow shaft adapted to receive the shift rod in a central bore of the shaft.

13. The CVT of claim 12 , wherein the sleeve is mounted coaxially about the shaft.

14. The CVT of claim 13 , wherein the shaft comprises a slot that provides a passage from the central bore to an external surface of the shaft.

15. The CVT of claim 9 , further comprising a shift pin coupled to the shift rod and to the sleeve.

16. The CVT of claim 15 , further comprising a shaft adapted to receive the shift rod and to allow the shift pin to be coupled to the sleeve.

17. A method of facilitating an adjustment of a speed ratio in a continuously variable transmission (CVT), the method comprising:

actuating a shift rod that is operationally coupled to a sleeve; and

wherein the actuating of the shift rod causes an axial translation of the sleeve.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein actuating a shift rod comprises an axial translation of the shift rod.

19. The method of claim 17 , wherein a shift pin operationally couples the shift rod to the shift sleeve.

20. The method of claim 17 , further comprising coupling the sleeve to a platform having a convex surface.
