Abstract

A method of allocating power to ports in an Ethernet switch, including: (1) assigning a configuration power to a selected port, wherein the assigned configuration power is less than a power supplied by the selected port to a powered, (2) enabling and powering the selected port in a single indivisible step, (3) determining the power limit of a device coupled to the selected port, (4) comparing the power supplied by the selected port to the device with the configuration power assigned to the selected port, and (5) if the power supplied by the selected port to the device is greater than the configuration power assigned to the selected port, then increasing the configuration power of the selected port to correspond with the power limit of the device.

Claims (50)

1. A method of allocating power among one or more ports in a switch, comprising:

assigning a configuration power to a selected port, wherein the assigned configuration power is less than a power supplied by the selected port to a powered device;

enabling and powering the selected port;

receiving information via the enabled and powered selected port that identifies a power limit of a device coupled to the selected port;

comparing a power supplied by the selected port to the device with the configuration power assigned to the selected port; and

if the power supplied by the selected port to the device is greater than the configuration power assigned to the selected port, then increasing the configuration power of the selected port to correspond with the power limit of the device.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising selecting the assigned configuration power to be zero.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising enabling and powering the selected port in a single indivisible step.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the information that identifies the power limit of the device comprises class information provided by the device.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining an available power capacity of the switch; and

determining that the available power capacity is greater than the power limit of the device prior to increasing the configuration power of the selected port.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising subtracting the power limit of the device from the available power capacity prior to increasing the configuration power of the selected port.

7. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

assigning a priority to each of the one or more ports; and

selecting each of the one or more ports to be enabled and powered in an order defined by the priority assigned to the one or more ports.

8. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

determining whether there are one or more enabled and powered ports having a lower priority than the selected port, and if so, then;

determining whether disabling the one or more lower priority powered ports will increase the available power capacity to a level greater than the power limit of the device, and if so, then disabling the one or more lower priority powered ports, and then powering the selected port.

9. The method of claim 5 , further comprising disabling the selected port until the available power capacity increases, if disabling one or more lower priority powered ports will not increase the available power capacity to a level greater than the power limit of the device.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising assigning the same configuration power to each of the one or more ports.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising assigning the selected port to a state that identifies an overload condition if the power supplied by the selected port to the device is greater than the configuration power assigned to the selected port.

12. A switch comprising:

a plurality of ports for data communication, wherein each port is capable of supplying power to a powered device coupled to the port;

a processor configured to pre-allocate a configuration power to each of the ports, wherein the pre-allocated configuration power of each port is less than the power supplied to a powered device coupled to the port; and

port control circuitry configured to simultaneously enable and power a selected port, determine a power limit of a device to be connected to the selected port, compare the power limit information received via the selected port with the configuration power assigned to the selected port, and increase the configuration power of the selected port to correspond with the power limit if the power limit is greater than the configuration power assigned to the selected port.

13. The switch of claim 12 , wherein the processor is configured to pre-allocate a configuration power of zero to each of the ports.

14. The switch of claim 12 , wherein the port control circuitry is configured to enable and power the selected port in a single indivisible step.

15. The switch of claim 12 , wherein the port control circuitry includes circuitry for determining the power limit of the device from class information provided by the device to the selected port.

16. The switch of claim 12 , wherein the switch has an available power capacity, the switch further comprising means for determining that the available power capacity is greater than the power limit of the device prior to increasing the configuration power of the selected port.

17. The switch of claim 16 , further comprising means for subtracting the power limit of the device from the available power capacity prior to increasing the configuration power of the selected port.

18. The switch of claim 16 , wherein the processor includes means for assigning a priority to each of the one or more ports, and means for selecting each of the one or more ports to be enabled and powered in an order defined by the priority assigned to the one or more ports.

19. The switch of claim 16 , further comprising means for removing power from one or more powered ports having a lower priority than the selected port, and then powering the selected port.

20. The switch of claim 12 , further comprising means for disabling power to the selected port if the power supplied by the selected port to the device is not greater than the configuration power assigned to the selected port.

21. A method of supplying power from a network device via a port of the network device, the port also being capable of sending and receiving data, the method comprising:

pre-allocating a configuration power to be supplied by the port, wherein the configuration power is an amount selected to trigger an overload condition on the port in the event a powered device is coupled to the port;

enabling and powering the port;

receiving information via the enabled and powered port that identifies a power limit of a device coupled to the selected port;

comparing power supplied by the port with the configuration power assigned to the port; and

if the power supplied by the port is greater than the configuration power assigned to the port, then increasing the configuration power of the port to correspond with the power limit.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein the pre-allocated configuration power is 0 Watts.

23. The method of claim 21 , wherein the pre-allocated configuration power is 0 to 1 Watt.

24. A switch comprising:

a plurality of ports for data communication, wherein each port is capable of supplying power to a powered device coupled to the port;

a processor;

a machine-readable medium having instructions stored thereon for the processor, the instructions to:

assign a configuration power to a selected port, the configuration power selected to trigger an overload condition on the port in the event a powered device is coupled to the port;

enable and power the selected port;

determine a power limit of a powered device coupled to the enabled and powered selected port; and

increase the configuration power of the selected port to correspond with the power limit if the power supplied to the enabled and powered selected port is greater than the assigned configuration power.
