Abstract

A computerized method for sharing removable storage media in a network, the method comprising associating, in an index entry, a first piece of removable storage media in a first storage device with at least a first storage policy copy and a second storage policy copy; copying, to the first piece of removable storage media, data associated with the first storage policy copy; and copying, to the first piece of removable storage media, data associated with the second storage policy copy.

Claims (35)

1. A method for sharing storage media in a network, the method comprising:

associating in an index a first piece of removable storage media in a first storage device with both a first storage policy and a second storage policy, wherein the first storage policy is different than the second storage policy;

copying, to the first piece of removable storage media, data associated with the first storage policy; and

copying, to the first piece of removable storage media, data associated with the second storage policy.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said copying data associated with the first storage policy is performed by a first media management module.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein said copying data associated with the second storage policy is performed by a second media management module different than the first media management module.

4. The method of claim 3 , additionally comprising deactivating the first media module with respect to the first storage device prior to said copying of the data associated with the second storage policy.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein said deactivating is triggered by a storage manager module in communication with the first media management module and the second media management module.

6. The method of claim 4 , additionally comprising instructing the second media management module to assume an active state with respect to the first storage device.

7. The method of claim 3 additionally comprising sharing the index with both the first media management module and the second media management module.

8. The method of claim 1 , additionally comprising:

associating in the index a second piece of removable storage with both the first storage policy and the second storage policy;

copying, to the second piece of removable storage media, data associated with the first storage policy; and

copying, to the first piece of removable storage media, data associated with the second storage policy.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the second piece of removable storage media is associated with a second storage device different from the first storage device.

10. A system for sharing storage media in a network, the system comprising:

a first storage device containing a first piece of removable storage media;

an index associating the first piece of removable storage media with both a first storage policy and a second storage policy, wherein the first storage policy is different than the second storage policy; and

a processor, wherein the processor is programmed to:

copy, to the first piece of removable storage media, data associated with the first storage policy, and

copy, to the first piece of removable storage media, data associated with the second storage policy.

11. The system of claim 10 , further comprising a storage management module that comprises the index.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the storage management module further comprises the processor.

13. The system of claim 10 , further comprising a media management module that comprises the index.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the media management module further comprises the processor.

15. The system of claim 10 , wherein the first storage device comprises a tape library storage device.

16. The system of claim 10 , wherein the first storage policy comprises a user preference.

17. The system of claim 10 , wherein the index is shared between a plurality of media agent modules in communication with the first removable storage media.

18. The system of claim 10 , wherein the index comprises an index entry, and wherein the index entry further associates a second piece of removable storage media with at least one of the first storage policy and the second storage policy.

19. A system for sharing storage media in a network, the system comprising:

means for storing data;

means for associating a first piece of removable storage media in said storing means with both a first storage policy and a second storage policy;

means for copying, to the first piece of removable storage media, data associated with the first storage policy; and

means for copying, to the first piece of removable storage media, data associated with the second storage policy.

20. The system of claim 19 , further comprising means for instructing each of said copying means to assume an active or an inactive state with respect to said storing means.
