Abstract

An example embodiment of a Web Hosting Community includes at least three members, i.e. a Hosting Provider, a Hosting Customer and a Partner. The Hosting Provider may have one or more Hosting Servers, and create and maintain a Partner Web Site and a Community Web Site. The Partner Web Site and the Community Web Site may provide tools that are tailored for the needs of the Partner and the Hosting Customer, respectively, to participate in the Web Hosting Community. The Partner may provide an application, i.e. software program, to be integrated into the Web Hosting Community and the Hosting Customer may purchase and install the application onto its Hosted Web Site, which is stored on a Hosting Server.

Claims (55)

1. A system, having at least one server computer communicatively coupled to a network, comprising:

a) at least one web site in an online hosting community;

b) a hosting community web site for the online hosting community, the hosting community web site comprising at least one software distribution web page; and

c) a software application distributed by a software distributor via the at least one software distribution web page, wherein the at least one software distribution web page is configured to:

i) receive, via the hosting community web site, the software application from the software distributor;

ii) before making the software application available to an administrator of the at least one web site, determine whether the software application is compatible for use within the at least one web site in the online hosting community to add or change functionality of the at least one web site;

iii) when the software application is compatible with the at least one web site in the online hosting community, download, by an administrator of the at least one web site, the software application to be installed and configured within the at least one web site in the online hosting community; and

iv) when the software application is not compatible with the at least one web site in the online hosting community, transmit, to the software distributor, a notification describing a compatibility issue between the software application and the at least one web site in the online hosting community.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a hosting control panel used by the administrator of the at least one web site and configured to remove or reinstall the software application.

3. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a software distributor web site comprising access to information on how to integrate the software application into the hosting community web site.

4. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a certification process for the software distributor to integrate the software application into the hosting community web site.

5. The system of claim 1 , further comprising an on-line forum written to and read by the online hosting community.

6. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a software distributor web site configured to modify the software distribution web page.

7. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a software distributor web site configured for the software distributor to read and respond to reviews and ratings displayed on the hosting community web site regarding the software application developed by the software distributor.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the hosting community web site includes a web page for one or more hosting customers to review a plurality of software applications that have passed a certification process and are available to be installed on the at least one web site.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the hosting community web site comprises a plurality of software distribution web pages comprising the at least one software distribution web page.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the hosting community web site comprises a plurality of product forums.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the hosting community web site includes a Wiki forum.

12. A system, having at least one server computer communicatively coupled to a network, comprising:

a) at least one web site in an online hosting community, wherein the web site is accessible to at least one hosting customer of a hosting provider;

b) a hosting community web site for the online hosting community, the hosting community web site comprising at least one software distribution web page; and

c) a software application distributed by a software distributor via the software distribution page, wherein the at least one software distribution web page is configured to:

i) receive, via the hosting community web site, the software application from the software distributor;

ii) before making the software application available to an administrator of the at least one web site, determine whether the software application is compatible for use within the at least one web site in the online hosting community to add or change functionality of the at least one web site;

iii) when the software application is compatible with the at least one web site in the online hosting community, download, by an administrator of the at least one web site, the software application to be installed and configured within the at least one web site in the online hosting community; and

iv) when the software application is not compatible with the at least one web site in the online hosting community, transmit, to the software distributor, a notification describing a compatibility issue between the software application and the at least one web site in the online hosting community.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the at least one server computer comprises at least one shared hosting server.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the at least one server computer comprises at least one or more virtual dedicated hosting servers.

15. The system of claim 12 , wherein the at least one server computer comprises at least one or more dedicated hosting servers.

16. The system of claim 12 , further comprising a hosting control panel, wherein the hosting control panel is configured to remove or reinstall the software application on an at least one additional web site.

17. The system of claim 12 , further comprising a software distributor web site comprising access to information on how to integrate the software application into the hosting community web site.

18. The system of claim 12 , further comprising a certification process for the software distributor to integrate the software application into the hosting community web site.

19. The system of claim 12 , further comprising an on-line forum written to and read by the online hosting community.

20. The system of claim 12 , further comprising a software distributor web site configured to modify the software distribution web page.

21. The system of claim 12 , further comprising a software distributor web site configured for the software distributor to read and respond to reviews and ratings displayed on the hosting community web site regarding the software application developed by the software distributor.

22. The system of claim 12 , wherein the hosting community web site includes a web page for the at least one hosting customer to review a plurality of software applications that have passed a certification process and are available to be installed on the at least one web site.

23. The system of claim 12 , wherein the hosting community web site comprises a plurality of software distribution web pages comprising the at least one software distribution web page.

24. The system of claim 12 , wherein the hosting community web site comprises a plurality of product forums.

25. The system of claim 12 , wherein the hosting community web site includes a Wiki forum.

26. A method, comprising the steps of:

hosting, by at least one server computer communicatively coupled to a network, at least one web site in an online hosting community;

hosting, by the at least one server computer, a hosting community web site for the online hosting community, the hosting community web site comprising at least one software distribution web page;

receiving, by the at least one server computer via a software distribution web page on the hosting community web site, the software application from the software distributor;

before making the software application available to an administrator of the at least one web site, determining whether the software application is compatible for use within the at least one web site in the online hosting community to add or change functionality of the at least one web site;

when the software application is compatible with the at least one web site in the online hosting community, downloading, by an administrator of the at least one web site via the at least one server computer, the software application to be installed and configured within the at least one web site in the online hosting community; and

when the software application is not compatible with the at least one web site in the online hosting community, transmitting, to the software distributor, a notification describing a compatibility issue between the software application and the hosting community web site.

27. The method of claim 26 , further including the step of hosting, by the at least one server computer, a hosting control panel configured for the administrator of the at least one web site to remove or reinstall the software application.

28. The method of claim 26 , further including the step of hosting, by the at least one server computer, a plurality of instructions on how to integrate the software application into the hosting community web site.

29. The method of claim 26 , further including the step of testing, by the server computer, the software application against a predetermined installation standard, wherein, responsive to a determination that the software application is certified, integrating, by the at least one server computer, the software application into the hosting community web site from a software distributor web site.

30. The method of claim 26 , further including the step of hosting, by the at least one server computer, a forum written to and read by the online hosting community.

31. The method of claim 26 , further including the step of receiving, by the at least one server computer, at least one modification to the software distribution web page from the software distributor via a software distributor web site.

32. The method of claim 26 , further including the step of receiving, by the at least one server computer, from the software distributor via a software distributor web site, one or more responses to reviews and ratings on the hosting community web site regarding the software application.

33. The method of claim 26 , further including the step of hosting, by the at least one server computer, a plurality of software distribution web pages comprising the software distribution web page within the hosting community web site.

34. The method of claim 26 , further including the step of hosting, by the at least one server computer, an online forum read by and written to the online hosting community.

35. The method of claim 26 , further including the step of hosting, by the at least one server computer, an online forum read by and written to the online hosting community, the online forum comprising a Wiki forum on the hosting community web site.
