Abstract

Methods of reducing retrograde fluid flow through a valve within a body vessel are provided. The methods can include the steps of identifying a valve exhibiting an undesirable amount of retrograde fluid flow within a body vessel, such as a venous valve or a heart valve, and providing a means for reducing the retrograde fluid flow. A medical device providing a desired amount of retrograde fluid flow can be modified after permitting the medical device to remain in a body cavity for a remodeling-effective time period. The implanted medical device can be modified by subsequently reducing the amount of retrograde fluid flow permitted across the implanted prosthetic valve within the body vessel.

Claims (16)

1. A method of treatment, comprising the steps of:

a. implanting a prosthetic valve within a body vessel, the prosthetic valve comprising a biological material and at least one aperture therethrough configured to permit retrograde fluid flow through the aperture;

b. permitting the prosthetic valve to remain in the body vessel for a period effective for permitting the biological material to attain a reduced level of thrombogenicity,

c. introducing an occluding device to the site of the prosthetic valve after the effective period of time; and

d. positioning the occluding device to at least partially block the at least one aperture to restrict retrograde flow and enhance the functionality of the valve.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the prosthetic valve is implanted within a vein.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the period effective for permitting the biological material to attain a level of reduced thrombogenicity, is at least about 14 days.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the occluding medical device reduces the cross-sectional area of the aperture.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the occluding medical device comprises an extracellular matrix material.

6. A method of treatment, comprising the steps of:

a. implanting a prosthetic valve within a body vessel, the prosthetic valve comprising a biocompatible material and at least one aperture having a cross-sectional area in the biocompatible material configured to permit retrograde fluid flow through the aperture;

b. permitting the prosthetic valve to remain in the body vessel for a period effective for permitting the biocompatible material to attain a reduced level of thrombogenicity;

c. implanting an occluding device within the body vessel, the occluding device modifying the prosthetic valve to reduce the enlarged cross-sectional area of the at least one aperture in the biocompatible material.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the step of modifying the prosthetic valve comprises attaching at least a portion of the biocompatible material to the interior wall of the body vessel.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the prosthetic valve is implanted within a vein.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the prosthetic valve is a radially-expandable medical device.
