Abstract

An acetabular cup assembly can include a cup portion and a bearing. The cup portion can include a porous metal outer layer having a first thickness and a solid titanium inner layer having a second thickness. A mating feature can be formed between the cup portion and the bearing. The bearing can be adapted to be selectively secured to the titanium inner layer. In one example, the bearing is formed of cobalt.

Claims (38)

1. An acetabular cup assembly comprising:

a cup having a rim and a first longitudinal axis that extends perpendicularly to the rim, the cup comprising:

a porous metal outer portion;

a solid metal inner portion connected to the porous metal outer portion and having the rim that includes a first ledge, a second ledge and a bearing engaging surface located between the first and second ledges, the first and second ledges being generally perpendicular relative to the first longitudinal axis of the cup, the bearing engaging surface being one of arcuate or tapered from the first ledge to the second ledge along a cross-section of the cup that is substantially parallel to the first longitudinal axis, the solid metal inner portion being metallurgically bonded to the porous metal outer portion such that the solid metal inner portion is non-removable from the porous metal outer portion, the solid metal inner portion further comprising at least one annular lip that extends radially substantially perpendicularly to the first longitudinal axis of the cup and into a thickness of the porous metal outer portion; and

a bearing having a first shoulder and a second longitudinal axis that extends perpendicularly to the first shoulder, the bearing further having a second shoulder and a cup engaging surface located between the first and second shoulders, the cup engaging surface being one of arcuate or conical along a cross-section of the bearing that is substantially parallel to the second longitudinal axis, wherein the bearing is adapted to be selectively secured to the solid metal inner portion in an assembled position, such that the first shoulder of the bearing and the first ledge of the rim engage, the second shoulder of the bearing and the second ledge of the rim engage and the respective bearing and cup engaging surfaces secure in an interference connection.

2. The acetabular cup assembly of claim 1 wherein the solid metal inner portion is integrally formed with the rim.

3. The acetabular cup assembly of claim 2 wherein a transition from the rim to the porous metal outer portion comprises:

a first annular pocket formed in the solid metal inner portion;

a second annular pocket formed in the porous metal outer portion;

a first annular lip extending around the solid metal inner portion and received within the second annular pocket; and

a second annular lip extending around the porous metal outer portion and received within the first annular pocket.

The acetabular cup assembly of claim 1 wherein the solid metal inner portion includes an inner mating surface having a first diameter and wherein the bearing includes an outer mating surface having a second diameter, wherein the second diameter is larger than the first diameter in an unassembled position.

5. The acetabular cup assembly of claim 4 wherein the cup is adapted to be heated prior to assembly with the bearing to increase the first diameter for receipt of the outer mating surface of the bearing.

6. The acetabular cup assembly of claim 4 wherein the bearing is adapted to be cooled prior to assembly with the cup to decrease the second diameter for insertion into the inner mating surface of the cup.

7. The acetabular cup assembly of claim 1 wherein the porous metal outer portion defines a first thickness and the solid metal inner portion defines a second thickness, wherein the first thickness is greater than the second thickness.

8. The acetabular cup assembly of claim 1 wherein the rim is formed entirely through a thickness of the cup.

9. The acetabular cup assembly of claim 1 wherein the bearing is formed of at least one of cobalt, ceramic and diamond.

10. The acetabular cup assembly of claim 1 wherein the bearing is formed of cobalt.

11. The acetabular cup assembly of claim 1 wherein the rim defines an opening and wherein the bearing engaging surface is one of arcuate or tapered, wherein tapered comprises tapered in a direction outwardly toward the opening.

12. The acetabular cup assembly of claim 11 wherein the rim further comprises an outermost surface that is parallel to the first and second ledges, wherein the first ledge and the second ledge are both recessed into the cup relative to the outermost surface.

13. An acetabular cup assembly comprising:

a cup having a rim and a first longitudinal axis that extends perpendicularly to the rim, the cup comprising:

a porous metal outer portion having a first thickness;

a solid metal inner portion having a second thickness that is less than the first thickness and wherein the rim includes a first ledge, a second ledge and a bearing engaging surface located between the first and second ledges, the first and second ledges being generally perpendicular relative to the first longitudinal axis of the cup, the bearing engaging surface being arcuate along a cross-section of the cup that is substantially parallel to the first longitudinal axis from the first ledge to the second ledge, the solid metal portion being metallurgically bonded to the porous metal outer portion and comprising at least one annular lip that extends radially into the first thickness; and

a bearing having a first shoulder and a second longitudinal axis that extends perpendicularly to the first shoulder, the bearing further having a second shoulder and a cup engaging surface located between the first and second shoulders, the cup engaging surface being arcuate along a cross-section of the bearing that is substantially parallel to the second longitudinal axis, wherein the bearing is adapted to be selectively secured to the solid metal inner portion in an assembled position, such that the first shoulder of the bearing and the first ledge of the rim engage, the second shoulder of the bearing and the second ledge of the rim engage, and the respective bearing and cup engaging surfaces secure in an interference connection.

14. The acetabular cup assembly of claim 13 wherein a transition from the rim to the porous metal outer portion comprises:

a first annular pocket formed in the solid metal inner portion;

a second annular pocket formed in the porous metal outer portion;

a first annular lip extending around the solid metal inner portion and received within the second annular pocket; and

a second annular lip extending around the porous metal outer portion and received within the first annular pocket.

The acetabular cup assembly of claim 13 wherein the solid metal inner portion includes an inner mating surface having a first diameter and wherein the bearing includes an outer mating surface having a second diameter, wherein the second diameter is larger than the first diameter in an unassembled position.

16. The acetabular cup assembly of claim 13 wherein the rim further comprises an outermost surface that is parallel to the first and second ledges, wherein the first ledge and the second ledge are both recessed into the cup relative to the outermost surface.

17. An acetabular cup assembly comprising:

a cup having a rim that defines an opening and a first longitudinal axis that extends perpendicularly to the rim and comprising:

a porous metal outer portion having a first thickness;

a solid metal inner portion being metallurgically bonded to the porous metal outer portion, the solid metal inner portion having the rim that includes a first ledge, a second ledge and a bearing engaging surface positioned between the first and second ledges, the first and second ledges extending generally perpendicular to the first longitudinal axis, the bearing engaging surface being tapered in a direction outwardly toward the opening from the first ledge to the second ledge along a cross-section of the cup that is substantially parallel to the first longitudinal axis, and

a bearing having a first shoulder and a second longitudinal axis that extends perpendicularly to the first shoulder, the bearing further having a second shoulder and a cup engaging surface located between the first and second shoulders, the cup engaging surface being conical along a cross-section of the bearing that is substantially parallel to the second longitudinal axis, wherein the bearing is adapted to be selectively secured to the solid metal inner portion in an assembled position, such that the first and second shoulders of the bearing and the first and second ledges of the rim respectively engage and the respective bearing and cup engaging surfaces secure in an interference connection.

18. The acetabular cup assembly of claim 17 wherein the rim further comprises an outermost surface that is parallel to the first and second ledges, wherein the first ledge and the second ledge are both recessed into the cup relative to the outermost surface.
