Abstract

Several ways are provided for a viewer of a movie to create a deep tag, that is, a bookmark for a segment of the movie. The deep tag can be associated with descriptive text and sent to an address provided by the viewer, either an e-mail address or an instant messaging address. Additionally, before the deep tag is created, it can be checked whether the content owner of the movie is known. If known, the content owner's rules, if any, regarding deep tagging are followed. If unknown, a set of registered content owners can be alerted of the presence of new content. When ownership of the new content is established, the already-created deep tags can be updated in accordance with the content owner's rules, if any, regarding deep tagging.

Claims (33)

1. A method for enabling a viewer of a movie to create movie segment bookmarks, comprising:

a movie system receiving a movie, the movie system embodied and operating on one or more server machines;

the movie system building a texture strip representing the movie, wherein the texture strip represents the movie in its entirety and comprises sequential textured frame representations corresponding to frames of the movie and associated information applied to or inserted into the frames, and wherein each of the sequential textured frame representations is produced by applying a predetermined function to a frame in the movie;

the movie system providing a player application to a client device associated with a viewer, the player application displaying on the client device the texture strip representing the movie and a movie segment bookmarking indicator having left and right edges marking a sequential group of frames therebetween of the movie relative to the texture strip, wherein the left and right edges of the movie segment bookmarking indicator are adjustable relative to the texture strip by the viewer through a user interface of the player application running on the client device associated with the viewer to define a desired sequential group of frames, wherein the movie is being played on the client device;

in response to an actuation of the movie segment bookmarking indicator by the viewer via the user interface on the client device to deep tag a portion of the movie, the player application sending movie metadata to the movie system, the movie metadata including settings of the movie segment bookmarking indicator marking the desired sequential group of frames relative to the texture strip;

the movie system creating a movie segment bookmark based at least in part on the settings of the movie segment bookmarking indicator, the movie segment bookmark identifying the sequential group of frames of the movie as a separately addressable movie segment, the movie segment having a segment address in the movie system; and

the movie system sending the movie segment bookmark over a network to at least one recipient who is permitted to view the movie segment.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising associating descriptive text provided by the viewer with the movie segment bookmark.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sending further comprises sending the movie segment bookmark to at least one address provided by the viewer.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sequential group of frames in the movie segment identified by the movie segment bookmark is defined by a predetermined amount of the movie.

The method of claim 4 , wherein the predetermined amount consists a frame of the movie being played on the device and presented to the viewer when the actuation of the movie segment bookmarking indicator occurs and wherein the movie segment bookmark identifies the frame of the movie being played on the device as the separately addressable movie segment having the segment address in the movie system.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the predetermined amount consists a specified number of frames beginning with a frame of the movie being played on the device and presented to the viewer when the actuation of the movie segment bookmarking indicator occurs.

7. The method of claim 4 , wherein the predetermined amount consists a specified number of frames ending with a frame of the movie being played on the device and presented to the viewer when the actuation of the movie segment bookmarking indicator occurs.

The method of claim 4 , wherein the predetermined amount consists a frame of the movie being played on the device and presented to the viewer when the actuation of the movie segment bookmarking indicator occurs, a first number of frames preceding the frame of the movie being played on the device and presented to the viewer when the actuation of the movie segment bookmarking indicator occurs, and a second number of frames following the frame of the movie being played on the device and presented to the viewer when the actuation of the movie segment bookmarking indicator occurs.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the sequential group of frames in the movie segment identified by the movie segment bookmark is defined by an amount of the movie captured upon receipt of the actuation of the movie segment bookmarking indicator, which begins with a frame of the movie being played on the device and presented to the viewer when the actuation of the movie segment bookmarking indicator occurs and continues to the end of the movie.

The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving a second actuation of the movie segment bookmarking indicator from the viewer, and wherein the sequential group of frames in the movie segment identified by the movie segment bookmark consists of frames of the movie being played on the device and presented to the viewer between the two actuations of the movie segment bookmarking indicator.

The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving a de-actuation of the movie segment bookmarking indicator from the viewer, and wherein the sequential group of frames in the movie segment identified by the movie segment bookmark consists of frames of the movie being played on the device and presented to the viewer between the actuation and de-actuation of the movie segment bookmarking indicator.

12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving from the viewer settings of start and end frames of a segment selector associated with the actuation of the movie segment bookmarking indicator.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sending occurs via an electronic mail message, wherein the movie system performs the sending, and wherein the electronic mail message includes a server address in the movie system.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sending occurs via an electronic mail message and wherein the electronic mail message includes a hyperlink to the movie segment bookmark.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sending occurs via a message that causes an icon to appear on a display associated with a recipient of the message, the icon being associated with a hyperlink to the movie segment bookmark.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the sending includes presenting on the display a question asking the recipient whether the recipient will accept the movie segment bookmark.

17. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the movie system receiving permission information from the viewer specifying whether a recipient of the movie segment bookmark is allowed to access, change, or share the movie segment bookmark.

18. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the movie system determining a popularity statistic of the movie utilizing movie segment bookmarks created by some or all of viewers of the movie.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein the movie segment bookmark is stored in association with viewer information.

The method of claim 19 , wherein (a) when the viewer is an anonymous user who is not known to the movie system, the viewer information is a cookie, (b) when the viewer is a casual user who is known to the movie system, the viewer information is an electronic mail address provided by the viewer, and (c) when the viewer is a formal user who is registered with the movie system, the viewer information is a registration identifier of the viewer.

The method of claim 1 , further comprising checking by the movie system whether a content owner of the movie is known to the movie system and, when a result of the checking is affirmative, the movie system storing the movie segment bookmark in a known content owner database associated with the movie system.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein the checking includes the movie system determining whether a movie-id-print of the movie is stored in a known content owner movie-id-print database.

23. The method of claim 22 , wherein the movie-id-print of the movie is one of: (a) a texture strip representing the movie, (b) a portion of a texture strip representing the movie, (c) a hash function applied to a texture strip representing the movie, and (d) a hash function applied to the movie.

24. The method of claim 21 , further comprising the movie system alerting one or more content owners of an existence of the movie when the result of the checking is negative.

25. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the movie system checking whether the movie has a known content owner who is known to the movie system and, when a result of the checking is affirmative, the movie system creating the movie segment bookmark in accordance with rules of the known content owner.

26. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the movie system determining which one or more additional viewers are watching the movie, and the movie system dynamically updating a movie segment bookmark display for each of the one or more additional viewers of the movie.

27. The method of claim 26 , wherein the updating is performed by the movie system in accordance with a predetermined preference of each viewer who is watching the movie.
