Abstract

An ultra-wideband pulse modulation system and method is provided. One method of the present invention includes transforming data into a ternary data set with data being represented with states of zero, positive one and negative one. The modulation and pulse transmission method of the present invention enables the simultaneous coexistence of the ultra-wideband pulses with conventional carrier-wave signals. The present invention may be used in wireless and wired communication networks such as hybrid fiber-coax networks. This Abstract is provided for the sole purpose of complying with the Abstract requirement rules that allow a reader to quickly ascertain the subject matter of the disclosure contained herein. This Abstract is submitted with the explicit understanding that it will not be used to interpret or to limit the scope or the meaning of the claims.

Claims (24)

1 . A method of communicating data, the method comprising the steps of:

transmitting an ultra-wideband pulse, the ultra-wideband pulse representing data; and

representing an additional data bit by an absence of an ultra-wideband pulse.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the ultra-wideband pulse comprises either a positive pulse or a negative pulse.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of representing an additional data bit by an absence of an ultra-wideband pulse comprises a positive ultra-wideband pulse that does not include a negative pulse.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of representing an additional data bit by an absence of an ultra-wideband pulse comprises a negative ultra-wideband pulse that does not include a positive pulse.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the ultra-wideband pulse is selected from a group consisting of: an electromagnetic energy ultra-wideband pulse and an impulse radio pulse.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the ultra-wideband pulse has a duration that can range between about 0.01 nanoseconds to about 1 millisecond.

7 . A computer program product for directing a general purpose digital computer to perform method steps to communicate data, the method steps comprising:

transmitting an ultra-wideband pulse, the ultra-wideband pulse representing data; and

representing an additional data bit by an absence of an ultra-wideband pulse.

8 . The computer program product of claim 7 , wherein the ultra-wideband pulse comprises either a positive pulse or a negative pulse.

9 . The computer program product of claim 7 , wherein the step of representing an additional data bit by an absence of an ultra-wideband pulse comprises a positive ultra-wideband pulse that does not include a negative pulse.

10 . The computer program product of claim 7 , wherein the step of representing an additional data bit by an absence of an ultra-wideband pulse comprises a negative ultra-wideband pulse that does not include a positive pulse.

11 . The computer program product of claim 7 , wherein the ultra-wideband pulse is selected from a group consisting of: an electromagnetic energy ultra-wideband pulse and an impulse radio pulse.

12 . The computer program product of claim 7 , wherein the ultra-wideband pulse has a duration that can range between about 0.01 nanoseconds to about 1 millisecond.

13 . An apparatus for communicating data, comprising:

means for transmitting an ultra-wideband pulse, the ultra-wideband pulse representing data; and

means for representing an additional data bit by an absence of an ultra-wideband pulse.

14 . The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the ultra-wideband pulse comprises either a positive pulse or a negative pulse.

15 . The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the step of representing an additional data bit by an absence of an ultra-wideband pulse comprises a positive ultra-wideband pulse that does not include a negative pulse.

15 . The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the step of representing an additional data bit by an absence of an ultra-wideband pulse comprises a negative ultra-wideband pulse that does not include a positive pulse.

16 . The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the ultra-wideband pulse is selected from a group consisting of: an electromagnetic energy ultra-wideband pulse and an impulse radio pulse.

17 . The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the ultra-wideband pulse has a duration that can range between about 0.01 nanoseconds to about 1 millisecond.
