Abstract

The disclosure is directed to catheter devices and methods for controlled application of irradiation to tissue adjacent a body site, such as cavity after removal of tissue, e.g. cancer. The catheter device includes an inflatable balloon having at least two layers. The inflatable balloon has an expansion of more than 25% and less than 200% when inflated from the un-inflated condition to a turgid condition, preferably more than 50% and less than 150%. In the turgid condition the polymeric material(s) of the balloon layers are at or near the elastic limit of the balloon layer material. The balloon may contain or be formed of or be coated with radiopaque material to facilitate positional or symmetry verification.

Claims (38)

1. A catheter device for irradiating tissue surrounding a site within a patient's body, comprising:

a. an elongated shaft which has a distal portion configured to be deployed within the body site and a central longitudinal axis;

b. a treatment location at the distal portion having one or more radiation guides configured to receive a radiation source and being off-set from the central longitudinal axis to irradiate tissue at least in part surrounding the body site; and

c. an inflatable multilayered balloon surrounding the treatment location with a wall thereof having at least two layers including a first layer separate from, inside, and in contact with a second layer around an entire periphery of the first layer, and each of the first layer and the second layer being secured to the distal portion of the elongated shaft and configured to surround the treatment location in an as formed configuration and an inflated configuration, at least one layer of the multilayered balloon having an expansion of at least 25% but less than 200% from the as formed configuration when the multilayered balloon is inflated to a turgid condition.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein the inflatable multilayered balloon has a predetermined size and shape when the layers thereof are in the turgid condition.

3. The device of claim 1 wherein at least one of the layers of the inflatable multilayered balloon has an expansion of less than 175% when inflated from the as formed configuration to the turgid condition.

4. The device of claim 1 wherein the layers of the inflatable multilayered balloon have expansions about 50% to about 150% when inflated from the as formed configuration to the turgid condition.

5. The device of claim 1 wherein each of the separate first and second layers of the multilayered balloon has an individual thickness of about 0.0003 to about 0.006 inch thick.

6. The device of claim 5 wherein the layers of the multilayered balloon are about 0.001 to about 0.002 inch thick.

7. The device of claim 1 wherein the total combined thickness of the separate first and second layers of the multilayered balloon is about 0.002 to about 0.004 inch.

8. The device of claim 1 wherein a tubular member having an inner lumen configured to receive a radiation source which is off-set from a central longitudinal axis so that the radiation source within the lumen is closer to the first portion of tissue surrounding the body site than the second portion of tissue.

9. The device of claim 8 wherein the distal shaft portion comprises a plurality of tubular members with an inner lumen extending through each of the plurality of tubular members configured to receive a radiation source.

10. The device of claim 9 wherein one or more of the tubular members are deflected or deflectable toward the first portion of tissue surrounding the body site to be closer thereto.

11. The device of claim 9 wherein a support member extends within the distal shaft portion to support one or more tubular members extending therein.

12. The device of claim 11 wherein the support member has a centrally disposed lumen which is axially aligned with the tubular members.

13. The device of claim 9 wherein the elongated shaft has a plurality of inner lumens which are configured to receive one or more radiation sources and which extend through the shaft to the tubular members at the treatment location.

14. The device of claim 9 wherein at least one of the tubular members at the treatment location is off-set away from the longitudinal axis.

15. The device of claim 9 wherein the plurality of tubular members are evenly distributed about the longitudinal axis.

16. The device of claim 9 wherein at least one of the elongated tubular members has a multi-functional lumen.

17. The device of claim 16 wherein the multi-functional lumen has at least two functions selected from the group consisting of delivery of a vacuum, delivery of a radiation source and delivery of inflation fluid.

18. The device of claim 8 wherein a radiation source is deployed within the inner lumen of the tubular member.

19. The device of claim 18 wherein at least one layer of the inflatable multilayered balloon has a stress at or near the elastic limit thereof when the inflatable member is inflated to a turgid condition.

20. The device of claim 18 wherein the inflatable multilayered balloon has a predetermined size and shape when in the turgid condition.

21. The device of claim 18 wherein the inflatable multilayered balloon has a volumetric expansion of less than 175% when inflated to a turgid condition.

22. The device of claim 18 wherein the inflatable multilayered balloon has a volumetric expansion of about 50% to about 150% when inflated to a turgid condition.

23. The device of claim 18 wherein the inflatable multilayered balloon has an expansion of at least about 25% when inflated to a turgid condition.

24. The device of claim 18 wherein each of the separate first and second layers of the multilayered balloon has an individual thickness of about 0.0003 to about 0.006 inch in an un-inflated condition.

25. The device of claim 18 wherein the layers of the multilayered balloon are about 0.001 to about 0.002 inch thick.

26. The device of claim 18 wherein total combined thickness of the separate first and second layers of the multilayered balloon is about 0.0006 to about 0.012 inch thick.

27. The device of claim 18 wherein the total thickness of the multilayered balloon is about 0.002 to about 0.004 inch.

28. The device of claim 18 wherein the inflatable multilayered balloon comprises radiopaque material.

29. The device of claim 28 wherein the material of at least one of the balloon layers of the multilayered balloon has radiopaque material incorporated therein.

30. The device of claim 28 wherein at least one of the multilayered balloon layers has a surface coated with radiopaque material.

31. The device of claim 28 wherein radiopaque material is a powdered metallic material.

32. The device of claim 1 wherein the distal shaft portion has at least one vacuum port and a vacuum lumen in fluid communication with the vacuum port.

33. The device of claim 32 wherein the vacuum lumen is configured to be in fluid communication with a vacuum source.

34. The device of claim 1 wherein the multilayered balloon is configured to partially fill the body site when in an inflated turgid condition.

35. The device of claim 1 wherein the multilayered balloon has an asymmetrical inflated turgid shape so that the radiation source is positioned closer to the first tissue portion than to the second tissue portion.
