Abstract

A reduced pressure delivery system for applying a reduced pressure to a tissue site includes a manifold delivery tube having at least two lumens and a manifold having a plurality of flow channels. The manifold is disposed within a first of the lumens of the manifold delivery tube. A balloon having an inner space and being capable of assuming collapsed and expanded positions is provided. The inner space of the balloon is fluidly connected to a second of the lumens of the manifold delivery tube.

Claims (75)

1. A reduced pressure delivery system for applying reduced pressure tissue treatment to a tissue site comprising:

a manifold delivery tube having at least two lumens;

a manifold having a plurality of flow channels, the manifold disposed within a first of the lumens of the manifold delivery tube;

a balloon having an inner space and being capable of assuming collapsed and expanded positions, the inner space being fluidly connected to a second of the lumens of the manifold delivery tube; and

a sharp tip configured to slide within the manifold delivery tube for selectively puncturing the balloon.

2. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second lumens are substantially coaxial.

3. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 1 further comprising a reduced pressure delivery tube fluidly connected to at least one of the plurality of flow channels.

4. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 3 , wherein the reduced-pressure delivery tube is capable of being disconnected from the at least one flow channel.

5. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 4 , wherein the manifold is bioresorbable.

6. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 3 , further comprising a reduced pressure source fluidly connected to the reduced-pressure delivery tube.

7. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 3 , wherein a reduced pressure is applied through the reduced-pressure delivery tube to the at least one flow channel.

8. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 7 , wherein the reduced pressure is applied cyclically.

9. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 1 , wherein the manifold delivery tube is a catheter.

10. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 1 , wherein the manifold delivery tube is a cannula.

11. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 1 further comprising markers operably attached to at least one of the manifold delivery tube and the manifold to visualize a location of the manifold delivery tube or the manifold relative to the tissue site.

12. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 11 , wherein the markers are radio-opaque markers.

13. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim wherein the manifold further comprises:

a flexible wall surrounding a primary flow passage and adapted to be placed in proximity to the tissue site, the flexible wall including a plurality of apertures through the flexible wall and communicating with the primary flow passage;

a blockage prevention member positioned within the primary flow passage;

a first conduit having at least one outlet fluidly connected to the primary flow passage to deliver reduced pressure to the primary flow passage; and

a second conduit having at least one outlet proximate the primary flow passage or the at least one outlet of the first conduit to purge at least one of the primary flow passage and the outlet of the first conduit with a gaseous fluid during the application of reduced pressure.

14. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 13 , wherein the blockage prevention member is a plurality of projections disposed on an inner surface of the flexible wall and extending into the primary flow passage.

15. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 13 , wherein the blockage prevention member is a cellular material positioned within the primary flow passage.

16. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 1 , wherein the manifold further comprises:

a flexible barrier;

a cellular material disposed adjacent to the flexible barrier, the cellular material including the plurality of flow channels; and

a reduced-pressure delivery tube fluidly connected to at least one of the plurality of flow channels.

17. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 1 , wherein the balloon is expanded by injecting a fluid into the inner space.

18. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 1 , wherein the tissue site includes a hard tissue.

19. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 1 , wherein the tissue site includes a soft tissue.

20. A reduced pressure delivery system for applying reduced pressure tissue treatment to a tissue site comprising:

an impermeable membrane having an inner space, the impermeable membrane being capable of assuming compressed and relaxed conditions;

a manifold having a plurality of flow channels, the manifold positioned within the inner space of the impermeable membrane; and

wherein a pressure within the inner space of the impermeable membrane is less than the pressure outside the impermeable membrane to reduce a volume of space occupied by the manifold within the impermeable membrane.

21. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 20 , wherein the impermeable membrane is sealed to maintain the pressure within the impermeable membrane.

22. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 20 further comprising a reduced pressure source fluidly connected to the inner space of the impermeable membrane to maintain the pressure within the inner space.

23. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 20 , wherein the impermeable membrane is dissolvable when placed in contact with bodily fluids or bodily tissue.

24. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 20 , wherein the impermeable membrane is capable of assuming an expanded position to dissect tissue adjacent the tissue site.

25. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 24 , wherein the impermeable membrane is expanded by injecting a fluid into the inner space.

26. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 20 further comprising an instrument having a sharp tip to selectively rupture the impermeable membrane.

27. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 20 further comprising:

a seal disposed on the impermeable membrane; and

an instrument to push the manifold through the seal.

28. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 20 further comprising markers operably attached to at least one of the impermeable membrane and the manifold to visualize a location of the impermeable membrane or the manifold relative to the tissue site.

29. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 28 , wherein the markers are radio-opaque markers.

30. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 20 further comprising a reduced-pressure delivery tube having a distal end fluidly connected to at least one of the flow channels of the manifold.

31. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 30 further comprising a reduced pressure source fluidly connected to a proximal end of the reduced-pressure delivery tube to deliver a second reduced pressure to the at least one flow channel.

32. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 31 , wherein the second reduced pressure is applied cyclically.

33. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 30 , wherein the reduced-pressure delivery tube is capable of being disconnected from the at least one flow channel.

34. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 33 , wherein the manifold is bioresorbable.

35. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 20 , wherein the manifold further comprises:

a flexible wall surrounding a primary flow passage and adapted to be placed in proximity to the tissue site, the flexible wall including a plurality of apertures through the flexible wall and communicating with the primary flow passage;

a blockage prevention member positioned within the primary flow passage;

a first conduit having at least one outlet fluidly connected to the primary flow passage to deliver reduced pressure to the primary flow passage; and

a second conduit having at least one outlet proximate the primary flow passage or the at least one outlet of the first conduit to purge at least one of the primary flow passage and the outlet of the first conduit with a fluid during the application of reduced pressure.

36. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 35 , wherein the blockage prevention member is a plurality of projections disposed on an inner surface of the flexible wall and extending into the primary flow passage.

37. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 35 , wherein the blockage prevention member is a cellular material positioned within the primary flow passage.

38. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 35 , wherein the fluid is a gas.

39. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 35 , wherein the fluid is a liquid.

40. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 20 , wherein the manifold further comprises:

a flexible barrier;

a cellular material attached to the flexible barrier, the cellular material including the plurality of flow channels; and

a reduced-pressure delivery tube fluidly connected to at least one of the plurality of flow channels.

41. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 20 , wherein the tissue site includes hard tissue.

42. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 20 , wherein the tissue site includes soft tissue.

43. A reduced pressure delivery system for applying reduced pressure tissue treatment to a tissue site comprising:

a manifold delivery tube having at least two lumens;

a manifold having a plurality of flow channels, the manifold disposed within a first of the lumens of the manifold delivery tube, the manifold comprising:

a flexible wall surrounding a primary flow passage and adapted to be placed in proximity to the tissue site, the flexible wall including a plurality of apertures through the flexible wall and communicating with the primary flow passage;

a blockage prevention member positioned within the primary flow passage;

a first conduit having at least one outlet fluidly connected to the primary flow passage to deliver reduced pressure to the primary flow passage; and

a second conduit having at least one outlet proximate the primary flow passage or the at least one outlet of the first conduit to purge at least one of the primary flow passage and the outlet of the first conduit with a gaseous fluid during the application of reduced pressure; and

a balloon having an inner space and being capable of assuming collapsed and expanded positions, the inner space being fluidly connected to a second of the lumens of the manifold delivery tube.

44. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 43 , wherein the blockage prevention member is a plurality of projections disposed on an inner surface of the flexible wall and extending into the primary flow passage.

45. The reduced pressure delivery system according to claim 43 , wherein the blockage prevention member is a cellular material positioned within the primary flow passage.
