Abstract

Methods and systems are provided for forwarding an electronic message. In one implementation, a method is provided for receiving an electronic message and an indication of a sender-specified destination for the electronic message. The method further includes determining whether the destination is available to receive an electronic message using a first mode of communication, determining whether an identity associated with the sender-specified destination is known by the sender, and determining whether to transmit a communication that is based on the electronic message using a mobile telephone number associated with the identity.

Claims (47)

1. A computer-implemented method for communicating using electronic devices, the method comprising:

receiving an electronic message and an indication of a sender-specified destination for the electronic message;

determining whether the destination is available to receive an electronic message using a first mode of communication;

determining a degree of separation between the sender and an identity associated with the sender-specified destination;

determining whether the identity associated with the sender-specified destination is known by the sender by comparing the degree of separation with a predetermined threshold; and

determining whether to transmit a communication that is based on the electronic message using a mobile telephone number associated with the identity wherein the determination to transmit is based on a determination that the destination is not available and that an identity associated with the sender-specified destination is known by the sender.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein:

the electronic message comprises an instant message, and the destination comprises an instant message identity.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein:

the instant message identity comprises an identity that is not signed on to an instant message service, and

determining whether the destination is available to receive an electronic message using a first mode of communication comprises determining whether the instant message identity is signed on to an instant message service, the method further comprising making a determination that the destination is not available if the instant message identity is not signed on to the instant message service.

4. The method of claim 2 wherein:

the instant message identity comprises an identity that is signed on to an instant message service and is associated with an idle state, and determining whether the destination is available to receive an electronic message using a first mode of communication comprises:

determining whether the instant message identity is signed on to an instant message service, and

determining whether the instant message identity is associated with an idle state if the instant message identity is determined to be signed on to the instant message service, the method further comprising making a determination that the destination is not available if the instant message identity is signed on to the instant message service and the instant message identity is associated with an idle state.

The method of claim 1 wherein determining whether an identity associated with the sender-specified destination is known by the sender comprises inferring that the degree of separation is greater than the predetermined threshold when contact information of the sender is included in a contact list of a person that is different from a person having the identity.

6. The method of claim 5 further comprising determining the mobile telephone number associated with the identity based on determining a mobile telephone number from the contact list.

7. The method of claim 5 wherein the contact list comprises one of an address book, a social network, or a buddy list.

8. An apparatus for communicating using electronic devices, the apparatus configured to:

receive an electronic message and an indication of a sender-specified destination for the electronic message;

determine whether the destination is available to receive an electronic message using a first mode of communication;

determine a degree of separation between the sender and an identity associated with the sender-specified destination;

determine whether the identity associated with the sender-specified destination is known by the sender by comparing the degree of separation with a predetermined threshold; and

determine whether to transmit a communication that is based on the electronic message using a mobile telephone number associated with the identity wherein the determination to transmit is based on a determination that the destination is not available and that an identity associated with the sender-specified destination is known by the sender.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein:

the electronic message comprises an instant message, and the destination comprises an instant message identity.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein:

the instant message identity comprises an identity that is not signed on to an instant message service, and determining whether the destination is available to receive an electronic message using a first mode of communication comprises determining whether the instant message identity is signed on to an instant message service, and the apparatus is further configured to make a determination that the destination is not available if the instant message identity is not signed on to the instant message service.

11. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein:

the instant message identity comprises an identity that is signed on to an instant message service and is associated with an idle state, determining whether the destination is available to receive an electronic message using a first mode of communication comprises: determining whether the instant message identity is signed on to an instant message service, and determining whether the instant message identity is associated with an idle state if the instant message identity is determined to be signed on to the instant message service, and the apparatus is further configured to make a determination that the destination is not available if the instant message identity is signed on to the instant message service and the instant message identity is associated with an idle state.

12. The apparatus of claim 8 further configured to infer that the degree of separation is greater than the predetermined threshold when contact information of the sender is included in a contact list of a person that is different from a person having the identity.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 further configured to determine the mobile telephone number is associated with the identity based on a determination that a mobile telephone number from the contact list.

14. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the contact list comprises one of an address book, a social network, or a buddy list.

15. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium including program instructions for performing, when executed by a processor, a method comprising:

receiving an electronic message and an indication of a sender-specified destination for the electronic message;

determining whether the destination is available to receive an electronic message using a first mode of communication;

determining a degree of separation between the sender and an identity associated with the sender-specified destination;

determining whether the identity associated with the sender-specified destination is known by the sender by comparing the degree of separation with a predetermined threshold; and

determining whether to transmit a communication that is based on the electronic message using a mobile telephone number associated with the identity wherein the determination to transmit is based on a determination that the destination is not available and that an identity associated with the sender-specified destination is known by the sender.

16. The computer-readable medium of claim 15 wherein, the electronic message comprises an instant message, and the destination comprises an instant message identity.

The computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein determining whether an identity associated with the sender-specified destination is known by the sender comprises inferring that the degree of separation is greater than the predetermined threshold when contact information of the sender is included in a contact list of a person that is different from a person having the identity.

18. The computer-readable medium of claim 17 , further comprising determining the mobile telephone number is associated with the identity based on a determination that a mobile telephone number from the contact list.

19. The computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the contact list comprises one of an address book, a social network, or a buddy list.

The computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein determining whether an identity associated with the sender-specified destination is known by the sender comprises inferring that the degree of separation is greater than the predetermined threshold when the sender is associated with the identity based on an indirect relationship in a social network.

21. The computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein determining whether an identity associated with the sender-specified destination is known by the sender comprises inferring that the degree of separation is greater than the predetermined threshold when the sender has previously communicated with the identity.

22. The computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein degree of separation is determined based on at least one of whether the sender has a direct relationship with the identity in a social network, whether the sender has previously communicated with the identity, whether a first contact list of the sender includes contact information of a user having a second contact list that includes contact information of the identity, and whether a first contact list of the sender includes contact information of a first user having a second contact list that includes contact information of a second user having a third contact list that includes contact information of the identity.

23. The computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the predetermined threshold is set based on at least one of a system parameter defined by an administrator, a default value, and a user having the identity.
