Abstract

An apparatus for generating an output signal includes a receiving system 160 generating a plurality of signals having a first format, an insertion module 166 inserting a source identifier into the plurality of signals, an encoder 182 encoding the plurality of signals into a plurality of transport streams and a multiplexer 210 . A local area network 130 routes the plurality of transport streams to the multiplexer 210 to form a combined signal. A processing system 200 compares the source identifier to an expected source. When the source identifier corresponds to the expected source, the processing system 200 modulates the combined signal to form a modulated signal. When the source identifier does not correspond to the expected source, the processing system 200 changes the combined signal. A modulator 214 modulates the combined signal to form a modulated signal. A system 202 forms the output signal from the modulated signal.

Claims (47)

1. A method of forming an output signal comprising:

receiving a plurality of signals having a first format; inserting a source identifier into the plurality of signals;

encoding the plurality of signals into a plurality of transport streams after inserting the source identifier;

after encoding, routing the plurality of transport streams through a local area network to a multiplexer to form a combined signal;

after routing and forming the combined signal, comparing the source identifier to an expected source signal;

when the source identifier corresponds to the expected source signal, modulating the combined signal to form a modulated signal and broadcasting the modulated signal as an output signal; and

when the source identifier does not correspond to the expected source signal, changing the combined signal to an error signal and broadcasting the error signal as the output signal.

2. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein changing comprises changing the combined signal to a blacked out signal.

3. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein changing comprises changing the combined signal to a warning signal.

4. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein inserting a source identifier comprises inserting the source identifier in a header.

5. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the source identifier comprises a network name.

6. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the source identifier comprises a channel name.

7. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the source identifier comprises call letters.

8. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein inserting a source identifier comprises inserting the source identifier in an unused portion of a digital signal.

9. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein inserting a source identifier comprises inserting the source identifier in a vertical ancillary portion of a digital signal.

10. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein the plurality of signals are in baseband.

11. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein inserting a source identifier comprises inserting the source identifier at a decoder.

12. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein inserting a source identifier comprises inserting the source identifier prior to encoding.

13. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein inserting a source identifier comprises inserting the source identifier prior to receiving.

14. A method as recited in claim 1 wherein inserting a source identifier comprises inserting the source identifier prior to routing.

15. A method as recited in claim 1 further comprising broadcasting the output signal as an uplink signal from a diverse site.

16. A method as recited in claim 15 wherein the uplink signal comprises a Ka band uplink signal.

17. A method as recited in claim 15 wherein the uplink signal comprises a digital television signal.

18. A method as recited in claim 16 wherein the uplink signal comprises a high-definition digital television signal.

19. An apparatus for generating an output signal comprising:

a receiving system generating a plurality of signals having a first format; an insertion module inserting a source identifier into the plurality of signals;

an encoder encoding the plurality of signals into a plurality of transport streams after inserting the source identifier;

a multiplexer;

a local area network routing the plurality of transport streams to the multiplexer to form a combined signal; and

a processing system, after the local area network routes the plurality of transport streams and the multiplexer forms the combined signal, comparing the source identifier to an expected source signal, when the source identifier corresponds to the expected source signal, the processing system modulating the combined signal to form a modulated signal and broadcasting the modulated signal as an output signal, and when the source identifier does not correspond to the expected source signal, the processing system changing the combined signal to an error signal and broadcasting the error signal as the output signal.

20. An apparatus as recited in claim 19 wherein the error signal comprises a blacked out a signal.

21. An apparatus as recited in claim 19 wherein the error signal comprises a warning signal.

22. An apparatus as recited in claim 19 wherein the insertion module inserting a source identifier comprises inserting a source identifier in a header.

23. An apparatus as recited in claim 22 wherein the source identifier comprises a network name.

24. An apparatus as recited in claim 22 wherein the source identifier comprises a channel name.

25. An apparatus as recited in claim 22 wherein the source identifier comprises call letters.

26. An apparatus as recited in claim 19 wherein the insertion module inserting a source identifier comprises inserting a source identifier in an unused portion of a digital signal.

27. An apparatus as recited in claim 19 wherein the insertion module inserting a source identifier comprises inserting a source identifier in a vertical ancillary portion of a digital signal.

28. An apparatus as recited in claim 19 wherein the plurality of signals are in baseband.

29. An apparatus as recited in claim 19 wherein the insertion module is integrated with a decoder.

30. An apparatus as recited in claim 19 wherein the insertion module inserting a source identifier prior to encoding.

31. An apparatus as recited in claim 19 wherein the insertion module inserting a source identifier prior to receiving.

32. An apparatus as recited in claim 19 wherein the insertion module inserting a source identifier prior to routing.

33. An apparatus as recited in claim 19 wherein a diverse site forms an uplink signal from the diverse site from the output signal.

34. An apparatus as recited in claim 33 wherein the uplink signal comprises a Ka band uplink signal.

35. An apparatus as recited in claim 33 wherein the uplink signal comprises a digital television signal.

36. An apparatus as recited in claim 33 wherein the uplink comprises a high-definition digital television signal.
