Abstract

A method and apparatus for controlling transmission air-time available to a wireless node within a wireless network is disclosed. The method includes occupied by transmission packets. The method includes the wireless node monitoring air-time available to the wireless node for wireless transmission. The wireless node controls wireless transmission of neighboring wireless devices if the air-time available is detected to be lower than a threshold.

Claims (18)

1. A method of controlling transmission air-time available to a wireless node within a wireless network, comprising:

the wireless node monitoring air-time available to the wireless node for wireless transmission;

the wireless node controlling wireless transmission of neighboring wireless devices if the air-time available is detected to be lower than a threshold;

wherein the neighboring devices are identified by the wireless node broadcasting an air-time cap request, and neighboring devices are identified as those devices that receive the air-time cap request.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising capping data throughput of clusters that include the neighboring devices.

3. A method of controlling transmission air-time available to a wireless node within a wireless network, comprising:

the wireless node monitoring air-time available to the wireless node for wireless transmission;

the wireless node controlling wireless transmission of neighboring wireless devices if the air-time available is detected to be lower than a threshold;

wherein monitoring the air-time available further comprises detecting how much air-time is occupied by non-neighbor device interfering signals.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the neighboring devices are identified by the wireless node analyzing record identifiers of devices that the wireless node receives packets from.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein controlling wireless transmission of neighboring wireless devices comprises communicating to the neighboring wireless devices to put a cap on data throughput of each client devices that routes through the neighboring devices.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the cap times out after a predetermined period of time, and renews it if the air-time available continues to be detected to be lower than the threshold.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the cap is eliminated if the available air-time is detected to be above a second threshold.

8. The method of claim 3 , wherein reducing air-time occupied by the neighboring wireless devices comprises capping air-time occupied by transmission of each client device.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein one of a plurality of air-time caps is selected based upon which of a plurality of air-time availability thresholds are triggered.

10. The method of claim 8 , further comprising determining the cap on data throughput based on a data rate of transmission of links associated with each client device, and packet success rate of the transmission of links associated with each client device.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the wireless network is a wireless mesh network, and determining the cap on the data throughput for each client devices is based on a data rate of each link, and a packet success rate of each link of a data path between the client device and a gateway of the wireless mesh network.

12. The method of claim 3 , wherein if the air-time occupied by a non-neighboring device interfering signal is a threshold amount greater than air-time occupied by neighboring devices, then data throughput of client devices of the neighboring devices is not capped.
