Abstract

A fluid consuming battery ( 10 ) is provided with a fluid regulating system ( 50 ) for regulating fluid entry into the battery. The battery ( 10 ) includes a fluid consuming cell ( 20 ) having a cell housing with fluid entry ports for the passage of a fluid into the cell housing. A first fluid consuming electrode and a second electrode are disposed within the cell housing. The fluid regulating system ( 50 ) includes a valve having a moving plate ( 66 ) disposed adjacent to a fixed plate ( 62 ). The moving plate and fixed plate both have fluid entry ports ( 68, 64 ) that align in an open valve position and are misaligned in a closed valve position. The fluid regulating system ( 50 ) also includes an actuator that may include one or more shape memory alloy (SMA) components ( 82 a, 82 b ) for moving the moving plate ( 66 ) relative to the fixed plate ( 62 ) to open and close the valve.

Claims (40)

1. A battery comprising:

at least one fluid consuming cell comprising:

a cell housing comprising one or more fluid entry ports for the passage of a fluid into the cell, said cell housing further comprising a first housing component and a second housing component,

a gasket disposed between said first and second housing components,

a first fluid consuming electrode disposed within said cell housing in electrical contact with said first housing component, and

a second electrode disposed within said cell housing in electrical contact with said second housing component; and

a fluid regulating system comprising:

a valve for adjusting the rate of passage of the fluid into said first fluid consuming electrode, and

an actuator for operating said valve, said actuator is responsive to a cell voltage appearing between said first and second housing components of said cell housing,

wherein said at least one fluid consuming cell further comprises an electrical conductor passing through a portion of said gasket to electrically couple said second housing component to said actuator.

2. The battery of claim 1 , wherein said actuator comprises a shape memory alloy component.

3. The battery of claim 1 , wherein said fluid regulating system is disposed within said cell housing.

4. The battery of claim 1 , wherein said fluid regulating system is disposed external to said cell housing.

5. The battery of claim 1 , wherein said electrical conductor comprises a layer of electrically conductive material applied to an inside surface of said first housing component, and a conductive element extending between said second housing component and said layer of electrically conductive material.

6. The battery of claim 1 , wherein said valve comprises a first plate and a second plate each having opposing surfaces adjacent each other.

7. The battery of claim 6 , wherein said actuator comprises a first shape memory alloy component for sliding said first plate into an open position, and a second shape memory alloy component for sliding said first plate into a closed position.

8. The battery of claim 7 , wherein said actuator comprises a lever arm to which said first and second shape memory alloy components are attached, said lever arm sliding said first plate between the open and closed positions.

9. The battery of claim 1 , wherein said actuator is disposed on a chassis attached to an outside surface of said first housing component.

10. A battery comprising:

at least one fluid consuming cell comprising:

a cell housing comprising one or more fluid entry ports for the passage of a fluid into the cell, said cell housing further comprising a first housing component and a second housing component,

a first fluid consuming electrode disposed within said cell housing in electrical contact with said first housing component, and

a second electrode disposed within said cell housing in electrical contact with said second housing component;

an electrical conductor secured to an outer surface of said cell housing and electrically coupled to said second housing component; and

a fluid regulating system comprising:

a valve for adjusting the rate of passage of the fluid into said fluid consuming electrode, and

an actuator for operating said valve, said actuator is responsive to a cell voltage appearing between said first and second housing components,

wherein said electrical conductor is electrically coupled to said actuator.

11. The battery of claim 10 , wherein said actuator is disposed within said cell housing, and wherein said first housing component has a hole therethrough such that said electrical conductor may be electrically coupled to said actuator.

12. The battery of claim 11 , wherein said valve comprises a first plate and a second plate each having opposing surfaces adjacent each other.

13. The battery of claim 10 , wherein said electrical conductor comprises a first layer of electrically insulating tape, a second layer of electrically insulating material, and a third layer of electrically conductive material disposed between said first and second layers.

14. The battery of claim 10 , wherein said actuator is disposed on a chassis attached to an outside surface of said first housing component.

15. The battery of claim 14 and further comprising a lid for covering said chassis, said lid including a hole for entry of a fluid.

16. The battery of claim 10 , wherein said actuator comprises at least one shape memory alloy component.

17. The battery of claim 10 , wherein said actuator comprises a circuit for sensing a voltage appearing between said first and second housing components.

18. The battery of claim 10 , wherein said valve comprises a first plate and a second plate each having opposing surfaces adjacent each other.

19. The battery of claim 18 , wherein said actuator comprises a first shape memory alloy component for sliding said first plate into an open position, and a second shape memory alloy component for sliding said first plate into a closed position.

20. The battery of claim 19 , wherein said actuator comprises a lever arm to which said first and second shape memory alloy components are attached, said lever arm sliding said first plate between the open and closed positions.

21. The battery of claim 10 , wherein said actuator is disposed within said cell housing, and wherein said first housing component has a hole therethrough such that said electrical conductor may extend from outside said cell housing into the inside of said cell housing via said hole so as to be electrically coupled to said actuator within said cell housing.
