Abstract

A fluid consuming battery ( 10 ) is provided with a fluid regulating system ( 50 ) for regulating fluid entry into the battery. The battery ( 10 ) includes a fluid consuming cell ( 20 ) having a cell housing with fluid entry ports for the passage of a fluid into the cell housing. A first fluid consuming electrode and a second electrode are disposed within the cell housing. The fluid regulating system ( 50 ) includes a valve having a moving plate ( 66 ) disposed adjacent to a fixed plate ( 62 ). The moving plate and fixed plate both have fluid entry ports ( 68, 64 ) that align in an open valve position and are misaligned in a closed valve position. The fluid regulating system ( 50 ) also includes an actuator that may include one or more shape memory alloy (SMA) components ( 82 a , 82 b ) for moving the moving plate ( 66 ) relative to the fixed plate ( 62 ) to open and close the valve.

Claims (40)

1. A battery comprising:

at least one fluid consuming cell comprising:

a cell housing comprising one or more fluid entry ports for the passage of a fluid into the cell,

a first fluid consuming electrode disposed within said cell housing, and

a second electrode disposed within said cell housing; and

a fluid regulating system comprising:

a valve for adjusting the rate of passage of the fluid to said fluid consuming electrode, said valve comprises a first plate and a second plate each having opposing surfaces adjacent each other, said second plate being movable relative to said first plate within a first plane so as to open and close said valve,

an actuator for operating said valve wherein power from the fluid consuming cell is applied to the actuator to open and close the valve, and

a lever arm attached to a fixed pivot point for pivoting within a second plane that is parallel to said first plane, said lever arm attached to said second plate, and wherein said actuator applies a force to said lever arm to move said second plate.

2. The battery of claim 1 , wherein said actuator comprises a first shape memory alloy component attached to said lever arm for opening said valve and a second shape memory alloy attached to said lever arm for closing said valve.

3. The battery of claim 2 , wherein said lever arm comprises an electrical conductive circuit path coupled to at least one of said first and second shape memory alloy components.

4. The battery of claim 3 , wherein said electrically conductive component is coupled to both of said first and second shape memory alloy components, such that electrical current passing through one of said first and second memory shape alloy components is conductive through said conductive component.

5. The battery of claim 1 , wherein said plates each have a plurality of corresponding apertures that align when said valve is open.

6. The battery of claim 1 , wherein cell housing comprises a can and a cover

7. The battery of claim 6 , wherein said first plate is an integral part of said can, said can having an inner surface and an outer surface.

8. The battery of claim 7 , wherein said second plate is adjacent said outer surface of said can.

9. The battery of claim 6 , wherein said first plate is spaced apart from said can.

10. The battery of claim 1 , wherein said first plate is disposed inside said cell housing.

11. The battery of claim 1 , wherein said first plate is disposed outside said cell housing.

12. The battery of claim 1 , wherein said first plate being stationary relative to said at least one fluid consuming cell.

13. The battery of claim 12 , wherein said lever pivots about said stationary first plate and actuates said moveable second plate.

14. A battery comprising:

at least one fluid consuming cell comprising:

a cell housing comprising one or more fluid entry ports for the passage of a fluid into the cell,

a first fluid consuming electrode disposed within said cell housing, and

a second electrode disposed within said cell housing; and

a fluid regulating system comprising:

a valve for adjusting the rate of passage of the fluid into said fluid consuming electrode, said valve comprises a first plate and a second plate each having opposing surfaces adjacent each other, said second plate being slidable relative to said first plate so as to open and close said valve,

an actuator for operating said valve wherein power from the fluid consuming cell is applied to the actuator to open and close the valve, and

a lever arm attached to a fixed pivot point and attached to said second plate, wherein said actuator comprises a shape memory alloy component that applies a force to said lever arm to slide said second plate.

15. The battery of claim 14 , wherein said fluid regulating system further comprises a chassis comprising an aperture for slidably receiving said second plate, wherein said fixed pivot point to which said lever arm is mounted is on said chassis.

16. The battery of claim 15 , wherein said shape memory alloy component comprises a pair of shape memory alloy wires each having a first end connected to said lever arm and a second end connected to said chassis.

17. The battery of claim 15 , wherein said fluid regulating system is disposed inside said cell housing.

18. The battery of claim 15 , wherein said fluid regulating system is disposed external to said cell housing.

19. The battery of claim 14 , wherein cell housing comprises a can and a cover

20. The battery of claim 19 , wherein said first plate is an integral part of said can, said can having an inner surface and an outer surface.

21. The battery of claim 20 , wherein said second plate is adjacent said outer surface of said can.

22. The battery of claim 19 , wherein said first plate is spaced apart from said can.

23. The battery of claim 14 , wherein said first plate being stationary relative to said at least one fluid consuming cell.

24. The battery of claim 23 , wherein said lever arm is attached to a fixed pivot point on said stationary first plate.
