Abstract

An intraocular lens system for implantation in the human eye, haptic system and method include an intraocular lens formed of a transparent biocompatible material for replacing the natural lens of the eye. The lens includes an outer periphery and an optical axis. There is a haptic system for securely anchoring the intraocular lens in the posterior chamber of the eye. The haptic system includes at least two haptic portions formed of a rigid biocompatible material that are connected to and extend outwardly from the outer periphery the lens in a plane substantially perpendicular to the optical axis of the lens for holding the lens in the eye. Each haptic portion has an outer edge that is sized and shaped to extend from the lens to the scleral wall of the posterior chamber of the eye. The outer edge of each haptic portion has an anchor that includes teeth that are configured with pointed ends that can be forcibly moved into the scleral wall between the ciliary body and iris for anchoring the lens in place in the eye.

Claims (14)

1. An intraocular lens system for implantation in the human eye, comprising:

a. an intraocular lens formed of a transparent biocompatible material for replacing the natural lens of the eye, the lens including an outer periphery and an optical axis;

b. a haptic system for securely anchoring the intraocular lens in the posterior chamber of the eye;

c. the haptic system including at least two haptic portions formed of a rigid biocompatible material that are connected to and extend outwardly from the outer periphery the lens in a plane substantially perpendicular to the optical axis of the lens for holding the lens in the eye;

d. each haptic portion having an outer edge that is sized and shaped to extend from the lens to the scleral wall of the posterior chamber of the eye;

e. the outer edge of each haptic portion having an anchor comprising teeth that are configured with pointed ends that can be forcibly moved into the scleral wall between the ciliary body and iris for anchoring the lens in place in the eye,

f. wherein the haptic portions comprise a plate with first and second telescoping members, the first member extending outwardly from the outer periphery of the lens in a first direction and the second member extending from the outer periphery of the lens in a direction opposite the first member.

2. The lens system of claim 1 , wherein the lens is an accommodating lens.

3. The lens system of claim 2 , wherein the lens comprises a resilient lens body for placement between the haptic system and the collapsed natural lens capsule of the eye.

A haptic system for securely anchoring an intraocular lens in the posterior chamber of an eye, the intraocular lens being formed of a transparent biocompatible material for replacing the natural lens of the eye, the lens including an outer periphery and an optical axis, the haptic system comprising:

a. at least two haptic portions formed of a rigid biocompatible material connected to and extending outwardly from the outer periphery the lens in a plane substantially perpendicular to the optical axis of the lens for holding the lens in the eye;

b. each haptic portion having an outer edge that is sized and shaped to extend from the lens to the scleral wall of the posterior chamber of the eye;

c. the outer edge of each haptic portion having an anchor comprising teeth that are configured with pointed ends that can be forcibly moved into the scleral wall between the ciliary body and iris for anchoring the lens in place in the eye;

d. wherein the haptic portions comprise a plate with first and second telescoping members, the first member extending outwardly from the outer periphery of the lens in a first direction and the second member extending from the outer periphery of the lens in a direction opposite the first member.
