Abstract

A complete storm water management system and process which performs both drainage and treatment tasks and incorporates a wetlands water treatment system. This system creates an infrastructure, flow control which is multi-level and multi-stage. This system incorporates a self-contained wetlands treatment system. This is a modular system which includes three or more linear chambers through which the storm water or other influent passes and is cleaned. The influent which flows into a storm drain, curb inlet, or inflow pipe into the system is directed first into a screening type catch basin inset filter within the first chamber of the system. The wetlands chamber is composed of one or more modular segments which may be made in various depths, lengths and widths. The influent is treated within the first chamber before it passes out of this chamber into the incorporated wetlands system. The water flows through the wetlands chamber where it is further filtered and decontaminated through both an aerobic and anaerobic process. In situations of high runoff there is a bypass component which runs directly from the first chamber and bypasses the wetlands chamber dumping the pretreated water into the discharge final chamber. This system is fitted with a variable level treatment component designed in such a way to offer variable discharge rates and thus vary the level of treatments over a wide range of flow rates. The system can be placed underground, and below concrete, such as in parking lots or park areas.

Claims (25)

1. A modular water treatment system, comprising:

a catch basin for receiving an influent, the catch basin having one or more filters, one or more walls, a floor, one or more bypass pipes and one or more inlet water transfer pipes;

a wetlands chamber having a vegetative submerged bed, one or more walls, a floor and one or more outlet water transfer pipes, configured to receive influent from the catch basin through the inlet water transfer pipes from the catch basin, and further filter the influent from the catch basin; and

a discharge chamber having a variable level treatment component with multiple outlets, one or more walls, a floor and a outflow pipe, configured to receive the filtered influent from the wetlands chamber, and discharge the influent from the system.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein one of the catch basin filters provides pre-treatment of influent by screening and absorbing gross solids, sediments, litter, trash and other debris.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein one of the catch basin filters has one or more walls and a floor, each of the walls and floor having an inner and outer metal mesh wall, with a space between the inner and outer wall to house stone wool filtration media slabs.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the catch basin also includes one or more inflow pipes in one or more of the four walls to allow influent to pass into the catch basin.

5. The system of claim 1 , further including two or more bypass pipes which transfer influent from the upper half of the catch basin through the wetlands chamber and into discharge chamber.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the bypass pipes include perforations at various distances along their lengths allowing some water to pass into the vegetative submerged bed of the wetlands chamber.

7. The system of claim 1 , further including stone wool media slabs in the vegetative submerged bed of the wetlands chamber which allow for increased filtration and plant root establishment.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the inlet transfer pipes extend into the wetlands chamber and a portion of the transfer pipes are perforated once the pipes enter the wetlands chamber to allow the influent to flow into the vegetative submerged bed.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the inlet transfer pipes make a 90 degree angle once they enter into the wetlands chamber forming a “U” shaped pipe within the wetlands chamber.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the system is configured so that the sediments and associated pollutants settle out of the influent and accumulate on the floor of the catch basin.

11. A modular water treatment system, comprising:

a catch basin for receiving an influent;

a wetlands chamber having a vegetative submerged bed, two or more walls, and a floor where in the walls and floor contain a break enabling additional wetlands segments to be added configured to receive influent from the catch basin; and

a discharge chamber having multiple outlets configured to receive influent from the wetlands chamber, and discharge the influent from the system.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the wetlands segments contain a vegetative submerged bed.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the wetlands segments are configured in an elbow shape and include a transfer chamber at the joint.

14. The wetlands segment of claim 13 , including a access port above the transfer chamber.

15. A system for treating wastewater, comprising:

a filtration panel comprising four or more walls enclosing an open space housing a filtration media,

the walls being water permeable in structure to allow the passage of water in either direction,

the filtration media filling the entire inner chamber of the filtration panel and being water permeable.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the filtration media is composed of 80 to 90 percent diabase material and 10 to 20 percent lime.
