Abstract

A system for managing and controlling data. The system includes provisions for easily and rapidly updating and managing a computer system, particularly a complex computer system in which several computers communicate with one another. The system also includes a central database which plays a key role in the management and control of the computer system. Most of the management functions are retained in the central database and remote offices, which generally do not retain data management information, communicate with the central office to retrieve data management information. The system also includes a novel approach to manipulating data.

Claims (28)

1. A system within a main office for managing data comprising:

a computer system;

a database; and

an interface,

the main office retaining at least one access rule and a set of mathematical equations where each equation is stored as a set of sequential steps within a dimension of the database where each step of the dimension is associated with one of a singe variable and a single mathematical operator that is used in conjunction with variables and mathematical operators of previous steps to generate the equation, the main office in communication with at least one remote office via the interface and the computer system to receive data and to apply the set of mathematical equations to the received data, where the main office sends the at least one access rule directly to the remote office via the interface, and where the main office receives communications from the remote office that are in conformity with the at least one access rule sent by the main office to the remote office.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein access rules govern the transmission of data from the remote office to the main office and wherein for each type of data transfer to the main office from the remote office, an access rule applies.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the access rule comprises a single permissible formatting standard rule used by the main office for data transfers of a corresponding type.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the single permissible formatting standard rule is automatically sent by the main office to the remote office in response to initiation of contact by the remote office and before the remote office sends the data to the main office.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the main office establishes multiple communication sessions with the remote office and wherein the single permissible formatting standard is applied for each communication session.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the access rule includes a security access code.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the access rule includes a password.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the access rule includes verification of login identification.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the access rule limits the amount of information the remote office is permitted to access.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the main office further maintains at least one data rule.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the at least one data rule comprises a format for a field.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the at least one data rule comprises a specification for a number of fields.

13. A method for managing data, comprising:

storing, via a computer system, mathematical equations in a database including a physical structure at a main office as a set of sequential steps, wherein the mathematical equations are stored within a dimension of the database within the main office where each step of the dimension is associated with one of a single variable and a single mathematical operator that is used in conjunction with variables and mathematical operators of previous steps to generate the equations;

sending, via the computer system, the at least one access rule from the main office directly to the remote office;

receiving, via the computer system, the data at the main office from at least one remote office, the data being received via communications that are in conformity with the at least one access rule sent from the main office to the remote office; and

applying, via the computer system, the set of mathematical equations to the received data.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the access rules govern the transmission of data from the remote office to the main office and wherein for each type of data transfer to the main office form the remote office, an access rules applies.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the access rule comprises a single permissible formatting standard rule used by the main office for data transfers of a corresponding type.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the single permissible formatting standard rule is automatically sent by the main office to the remote office in response to initiation of contact by the remote office and before the remote office sends the data to the main office.

17. The method of claim of claim 16 , wherein the main office establishes multiple communication sessions with the remote office and wherein the single permissible formatting standard is applied for each communication session.

18. The method of claim 13 , wherein the access rule includes at least one of: a security access code, a password, and verification of login identification.

19. The method of claim 13 , wherein the access rule limits the amount of information the remote office is permitted to access.

20. The method of claim 13 , wherein the main office further maintains at least one data rule.
