Abstract

A compact retrievable blood clot filter and a method of retrieving the filter. The retrievable filter has a primary hub, a set of filter struts having a conical configuration and extending from the primary hub, and a set of alignment struts connected to the filter struts to provide centering of the filter. A set of control struts connected to the alignment struts has a secondary hub which is axially movable relative to the primary hub. Movement of the secondary hub causes the control struts to pull the alignment struts radially inward into a retractable state for retrieval of the filter.

Claims (33)

1. A method of retrieving a retrievable blood clot filter having an axis, a primary hub, a set of filter struts, and a set of alignment struts having a first end connected to the filter struts at a position upstream of said primary hub, a secondary hub, and a plurality of connector elements, each of said connector elements extending from said secondary hub to form a juncture with a second end of said alignment struts, the method comprising:

capturing the secondary hub of the filter in a deployed state;

axially moving the captured secondary hub in a downstream direction relative to the primary hub thereby causing said plurality of connector elements to pull said alignment struts radially inward; and

moving a sheath over the filter struts to enclose the plurality of filter struts.

2. The method according to claim 1 wherein the step of capturing includes:

holding said secondary hub; and

placing the sheath over the secondary hub.

3. The method according to claim 1 wherein the second hub has a retrieval hook and wherein the step of capturing includes:

using a snare to capture the retrieval hook of the secondary hub.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein each of said connector elements includes a barb that engages a vessel wall and wherein the step of axially moving includes:

axially moving the captured secondary hub relative to the primary hub hereby causing said plurality of connector elements to pull said alignment struts radially inward, thereby disengaging the barbs from the vessel wall at an angle perpendicular to the axis.

A method of retrieving a retrievable blood clot filter having an axis, a primary hub having a lumen, a set of filter struts, and a set of alignment struts having first and second ends and being connected to the filter struts, a secondary hub, and a plurality of connector elements, each of said connector elements extending from said secondary hub to form a juncture with one of said alignment struts, the method comprising:

capturing the secondary hub of the filter in a first tube;

axially moving the captured secondary hub relative to the primary hub thereby causing said plurality of connector elements to be pulled through the lumen of the primary hub such that said alignment struts are pulled radially inward; and

moving a second tube over the filter struts to enclose the plurality of filter struts in the second tube.

6. The method according to claim 5 wherein the step of capturing includes:

engaging said secondary hub; and

placing the first tube over the secondary hub.

7. The method according to claim 5 wherein the second hub has a retrieval hook and wherein the step of capturing includes:

using a snare to capture the retrieval hook of the secondary hub.

8. The method according to claim 5 , wherein each of said connector elements includes a barb that engages a vessel wall and wherein the step of axially moving includes:

axially moving the captured secondary hub relative to the primary hub thereby causing said plurality of connector elements to be pulled through the lumen of the primary hub such that said alignment struts are pulled radially inward, thereby disengaging the barbs from the vessel wall at an angle perpendicular to the axis.

A method of retrieving a retrievable blood clot filter having an axis, a primary hub, a set of filter struts, and a set of alignment struts having first and second ends wherein each alignment strut forms an alignment junction with an adjacent alignment strut, the first end of the alignment struts being connected to the filter struts at a position upstream of said primary hub, the retrievable blood clot filter further having a secondary hub, and a plurality of connector elements, each of said connector elements extending from said secondary hub and being connected to the second end of said alignment struts at an associated one of the alignment junctions, the method comprising:

capturing the secondary hub of the filter in a deployed state;

axially moving the captured secondary hub in a downstream direction relative to the primary hub thereby causing each connector element to pull the associated alignment strut and the associated adjacent alignment strut to move said alignment struts radially inward; and

moving a sheath over the filter struts to enclose the plurality of filter struts.

10. The method according to claim 9 wherein the step of capturing includes:

holding said secondary hub; and

placing the sheath over the secondary hub.

11. The method according to claim 9 wherein the second hub has a retrieval hook and wherein the step of capturing includes:

using a snare to capture the retrieval hook of the secondary hub.

12. The method according to claim 9 , wherein each of said connector elements includes a barb that engages a vessel wall and wherein the step of axially moving includes:

axially moving the captured secondary hub relative to the primary hub thereby causing each connector element to pull the associated alignment strut and the associated adjacent alignment strut to move said alignment struts radially inward, thereby disengaging the barbs from the vessel wall at an angle perpendicular to the axis.
