Abstract

A method and composition for treating a patient suffering from a disease, disorder or condition and associated pain include the administration to the patient of a therapeutically effective amount of a neurotoxin selected from a group consisting of Botulinum toxin types A, B, C, D, E, F and G.

Claims (48)

1 . A method for treating a pain associated with a muscle activity or contracture, the method comprising the step of administering to a patient a therapeutically effective amount of the neurotoxic component of a botulinum toxin to thereby treat the pain associated with the muscle activity or contracture, wherein the neurotoxic component administered to the patient has been purified from a botulinum toxin obtained by fermenting Clostridium botulinum.

2 . The method of claim 1 wherein the neurotoxic component is the neurotoxic component of a botulinum toxin selected from the group consisting of botulinum toxin types A, B, C, D, E, F and G.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the botulinum toxin is botulinum toxin type A.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein between about 1 unit and about 250 units of the neurotoxic component is administered.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein alleviation of the pain associated with a muscle activity or contracture occurs in about 1 to about 7 days.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the neurotoxic component has a molecular weight of about 150 kilodaltons.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the muscle activity or contracture is a muscle spasm.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the pain is a low back pain.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the pain is a myofacial pain.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the pain is a spasticity pain.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the pain is a dystonia pain.

12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the pain is an arthritis pain.

13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the pain is a headache.

14 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the pain is a sports injury pain

15 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the pain is secondary to stroke.

16 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the pain is associated with a smooth muscle spasm.

17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the pain is associated with a smooth muscle spasm of a gastrointestinal smooth muscle.

18 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the neurotoxic component is administered by local administration.

19 . A method for treating a pain associated with a muscle activity or contracture, the method comprising the step of administering to a patient a therapeutically effective amount of the neurotoxic component of only a botulinum toxin type A to thereby treat the pain associated with the muscle activity or muscle contracture, wherein the neurotoxic component administered to the patient has been purified from a botulinum toxin obtained by fermenting a Clostridium botulinum bacterium.

20 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the neurotoxic component has a molecular weight of about 150 kilodaltons.

21 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the muscle activity or contracture is a muscle spasm.

22 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the pain is a low back pain.

23 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the pain is a myofacial pain.

24 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the pain is a spasticity pain.

25 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the pain is a dystonia pain.

26 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the pain is an arthritis pain.

27 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the pain is a headache.

28 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the pain is a sports injury pain

29 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the pain is secondary to stroke.

30 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the pain is associated with a smooth muscle spasm.

31 . The method of claim 30 , wherein the pain is associated with a smooth muscle spasm of a gastrointestinal smooth muscle.

32 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the neurotoxic component is administered by local administration.

33 . A method for treating a pain associated with a muscle activity or contracture, the method comprising the step of administering to a patient a therapeutically effective amount of the neurotoxic component from a single botulinum toxin type to thereby treat the pain associated with the muscle activity or muscle contracture, wherein the neurotoxic component administered to the patient has been purified from a botulinum toxin obtained by fermenting a Clostridium botulinum bacterium.

34 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the botulinum toxin type is selected from the group consisting of the botulinum toxin types A, B, C, D, E, F and G.

35 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the botulinum toxin type is botulinum toxin type A.

36 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the neurotoxic component has a molecular weight of about 150 kilodaltons.

37 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the muscle activity or contracture is a muscle spasm.

38 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the pain is a low back pain.

39 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the pain is a myofacial pain.

40 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the pain is a spasticity pain.

41 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the pain is a dystonia pain.

42 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the pain is an arthritis pain.

43 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the pain is a headache.

44 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the pain is a sports injury pain

45 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the pain is secondary to stroke.

46 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the pain is associated with a smooth muscle spasm.

47 . The method of claim 46 , wherein the pain is associated with a smooth muscle spasm of a gastrointestinal smooth muscle.

48 . The method of claim 33 , wherein the neurotoxic component is administered by local administration.
